Tax when buying car from a garage ?

The car should be taxed before if it's to be driven on the road.
A decent garage should tax the car for you, but there's no legal obligation as far as I'm aware.

If selling a car without tax we always just used to make a note on the documents to say the customer was advised to tax the vehicle and took it understanding that it wasnt.
AFAIK there is no legal obligation on behalf of the garage to make sure the vehicle is taxed.

What does this mean? I've never heard of drive-through post-offices.

well i used a photocopy of the logbook for the car i bought to tax it before i picked it up, but you can just use the green slip after buying it, but you're not supposed to drive it away until you have taxed it.
Usually I negotiate the tax into the price, or tell the dealer that i will pay the extra £65/120 etc if the tax it for me. Most dealers won't refuse as they aren't having to pay it out of there own pocket.

Like people have already said, a dealer can tax the car for you with very little effort - this is probably the easiest way to do it.
That said, I would never buy a car unless they agreed to put at least six months tax on it - if they don't have the margin for it, they've had to spend serious money else where and I'd avoid the car anyway.
My dealer put 12 months on the ST when I purchased it without even having to ask. Because of this, I knew I could play hard to get the front bumper sprayed (stone chips)
