Taxi Driving?

depends really,

have been a taxi driver up in Glasgow for 10 years I cant complain, but I do a mix of local taxi work and airport transfers and medical transfers so fingers are spread over a number of pies.

will post a proper reply later when I get more time but TL:DR version is

yes it can be a good career but theres a lot of regional variation on work, earnings etc. it really is advised to join one of the taxi forums and get some local insight www.taxi-driver.co.uk for example. also depends on what kind of work you want to do ie local, airports, distance etc and type of license you go for ie Private hire, Hackney etc etc.

as I said i'll try and get a more detailed reply up later but if you want more info drop me a email i'll try and put you in touch with someone knowledgable about your local area(i'm a regional rep for the Private Hire Drivers Association)

email addy is Rob "at" thephda.co.uk

Thanks for the reply Rob.

From my limited knowledge, I would prefer private hire and not hackney (Simply owing to the costs of hiring/purchasing a hackney cab).

I am from Nottingham and from what I can gather from speaking with people around here, it is very much a case of "who you know" to get the contract work such as school runs, hospital pick ups etc.

I would be fine with Airport runs but again, it seems like something you have to "earn"?

Will definitely be dropping you an email.

Thanks again.

Worth getting into or not worth the hassle nowadays?

I heard it's now illegal to accept sex as payment?
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...bies-council-one-caught-clinch-passenger.html

oh wait might just be Hartlepool

Taxi drivers have been warned that it is not appropriate to accept sexual favours instead of fares.

The bizarre warning was made after a driver had sex with a passenger in the back of his cab when she could not afford the fare.

Now dozens of firms in the north east have received a letter telling them not to engage in sexual liasions if they want to keep their job.
just shocking beyond belief, one of the few perks of being a taxi driver gone.

there's at least one guy who owns a taxi firm that posts on these forums, maybe one of those will chip in with some proper good advice

He was discovered having sex with the woman in the back of his taxi last December outside the woman's home in Hartlepool, Cleveland.
classy lady

A driver had his licence revoked for having sex with a passenger in the back of his vehicle.

sooo.......if she invited him in (as they were outside her house) then it would be ok ;) ? :p

Hackney carriage doesn't require you to have a black cab. It's a category of license, not car. Its just become associated with the image of a black cab.

My dad holds a hackney license and drives an Octavia. Hacnkey licenses mean you can pick up off the street and use controlled ranks. Private hire must always be pre booked. Hackney tends to be more strictly regulated too.

indeed under a lot of councils hackney numbers are strictly limited so forcing you to "buy in" or effectively buy a business out to obtain a plate even though the plate remains the property of the issuing coincil :)

Op sent you a mail this morning did you receive it ok?

Sent you reply, sorry about the late response.

Out of the two boroughs near me, one requires the DSA test, while Nottingham City appears to run its own, which one would be recommended or would they both be pretty much the same? Any benefit of having the DSA one if not needed?

Need to look into the boring stuff like car/meter hire and insurance now :)
