Hi guys, we switched to TalkTalk from BE (Dads poor choice) and for starters we've lost 10 megabytes download which is rubbish, and halved upload speed ... all for a great saving in money!

Anyways, can you tell me if my TCP settings are ok?! Confused about the matter, because our wireless is rubbish on my mums PC, doesn't work and on the homepage 168.1.1 etc the wireless part is Amber so ... if anyone is on Talktalk to help, their customer service is rubbish.

If its just one one PC then chances are it is the machine, does the internet still under perform on other computers or when your mums PC is connected via cable?

MTU should be 1500 on the BE network.

Your mention of losing 10 MB/s downstream sync probably means one of two things;
1) You've subscribed to BE's 'Value' product and have gone from 18 Mb/s to 8 Mb/s, the maximum achievable.
2) You have a line fault.

If the first case isn't correct I suggest going to the BE forum and posting a request for troubleshooting assistance.

No, we went from BE to TalkTalk, so no longer on BE :)
Eeek, I totally misread the opening post :o

Rather than go to the BE forums, have you had a look over at the TalkTalk member forums instead? There seem to be numerous threads with regards to adjusting TCP settings; quite worrying in a sense. Conflicting opinions, however, are to be found:
  • "Talktalk suggest that for most people an MTU of either 1400 or 1432 is optimal, depending on your router type."
    [*]"Like I have already said before 1492 seems to be the optimal for talktalk LLU 24, well for me it is anyway."
    [*]"I've always found 1432 (MTU) and 1392 (MSS) to deliver the goods since discovering, about two years ago, that too high an MTU can cause web browsing and WebMail problems."
    [*]"Well after many trials and changes I've settled on MTU 1382 and TCP 1342. Pages open just as quick and download speeds are 0.8 meg better than using 1432. This is using the Echolife 520 and Win XP."

It appears therefore that, if you are so inclined, you should toddle off and test the MTU setting out for yourself - adjusting it on the modem/router and your OS. Bear in mind that on Vista you shouldn't need to touch the receive window size.

If you want to elaborate further on this we might be able to help some more.
