Team Fortress help

My thoughts exactly I bought it ages ago but it seems all different now. I found you just have to play it loads to unlock stuff

Do achievements. Play the game and get random drops. Randomly ask people if they a spare weapon you want (trust me, if you ask 100 people for a weapon you will end up with 200 weapons; people who play the game a lot will have hundreds of spare weapons. I recently crafted all my spare weapons into metal and got 50 scrap, which is 100 weapons I didn't need). Trade a weapon you don't want for a weapon you do. etc.

When you build up a good reserve of items you can craft spare weapons into metal, then trade that metal for items of higher value.

^ all good advice, i seem to be getting loads of trade requests recently for some reason, i never really look in to the trading though, but i have started to take notice a bit now as i could do with a few weapons. I did get quite a bit for the Deus Ex Sniper rifle though;)

btw, i have been playing TF2 quite a bit in the last few weeks whilst waiting for BF3 but have become quite addicted! I will probably be playing it instead of BF3 lol

Just play for fun for now, you will pick up how to craft later, its not inportant!

also all the weapons you get at the start are probably better then the crafted weapons :)

hats are mostly for show.

This is very true, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. 99% of the unlocks are fun sidegrades. You're not at a disadvantage by not having them. There's only 3-4 weapon that are objectively better for a particular weapon slot, but they're all melee weapons which have little impact in general.

You THINK you're upgrading by getting these shiny new weapons and walt about thinking you're the bees knees.

Then you get raped five rounds in a row because the other team has two medic heavy pairs using bog standard items and your team is all solo players.

Items never make you better.

For example... wossit, last sniper rifle upgrade is pretty much like the normal one but does extra damage when fully charged.

Upgrade right?

No.

You can't fire unscoped (so you're stuck trying to machete a spy shooting you or you get backstabbed because you didn't swap the smg for the anti-stab shield) and every time you fire at any charge level it leaves a bright tracer line, constantly reminding players where you are.

All this is the games biggest strength though imo, an "upgraded" weapon isn't simply more powerful, or with better accuracy, it is balanced totally differently so that it doesn't really have an advantage over the starting weapons.

The only weapon i have found to be genuinely much better is the pistol( i forget the name) that i received for pre-ordering Deus Ex, i think it has a higher critical hit chance so gets me quite a few one hit kills, but then it can only be used by the Spy.

Another example is a weapon i got earlier for the Pyro, replacing the shotgun, it fires things that explode into fire and can set enemies alight, it is completely different to the shotgun but no more efficient, they will both suit different players.

Indeed, there are some good combos you can get from drops/trade (axtinguisher + Degreaser, Demoknight loadouts) but on the whole it's nothing amazing. If you like playing medic you might want to get a kritzkreig as that's another that changes the class but otherwise things like 99% of the solider items arn't really all that good (1% being the equaliser) and you'll be just as deadly as those with years of gathering hats.

i tend to play heavy and ask a medic to stick with me, normally get at least 10 kills before the other team decide to attack the medic instead of me :)

also, not really bothered about upgrades, but i want to look pretty :)

There is only one unlock that is a flat-out upgrade and that is the Equalizer, which replaces the Soldier's shovel, and perharps the axtinguisher for Pyro.

If you just get the 3rd achievement milestone with each class (Super easy to do) you get the three original unlocks for each class.

People may make out that crafting and trading is a huge part of the game; it isn't. If you get the achievement drops that's all you'll really need, you can then just play with the new stuff as you find it. If you can't hold your own with standard loadouts, unlocks aren't going to help.

Its crazy how different Team Fortress is these days. I remember playing Well and 2fort back in TFC days.
