... that's teamocuk.co.uk - not this forum. :)

I've been running Google Analytics on Team OcUK for a little while now, and while it's not a perfect option (doesn't count what gets posted on forums - e.g. signatures - for example), it does tell me that I'm getting only about 200 actual pageviews/day.

That's not enough for a site that is costing £130/mo for me to host, and has cost me £7000 to date, so I'll be doing two things...

a) Adding a PayPal Donate link.
b) Looking to downsize. Not yet sure how, but I'll work on that over the next few months.

I could get extra traffic by giving it a fresh lick of paint, but I don't really have the time, and other interests are taking over. :(

Hope that doesn't upset anyone who uses the site. I don't plan on going away, and on the upside maybe some extra money will go towards new hardware. :)

Bloody hell - I use it basically every day looking at about 5-10 pages, so that means only 20-40 people look daily if I understand you right :(

Just do me a favour, and don't alter it for about 3-4 weeks, as I have my next (long overdue) certificate coming (only joking, the cost does not justify the useage).

Where does most of the cost go? Would it be worth putting it on a cheaper hosting package?

It's too big for most hosting packages - needing 50GB for data and 200GB for backups. It also eats CPU and RAM for breakfast while updating. That be the problem with finding cheaper hosting.

Thinking about some bigger disks for my home server and then bringing it back here. It'd be slow, and not nearly so reliable, but at that usage it really doesn't matter.

I don't mind what it's cost me so much, and I was planning to do more with it which would have made more justification, but it just hasn't happened. It'd have been nice to have that money, sure (it's twice my credit card balance, for starters), but I use the server for all my own stuff too so I'd have to have decent hosting somewhere. A VDS would do for just me though - costing 50-70% less.

One option would be to AdWords it, but I doubt I'd get more than 5%, and I'd only do it if I unblocked AdWords from my own browser (which I'm not doing!)

Thanks - that's much cheaper than I expected!

Used 1&1 before and it didn't go so well, but that was about 7 years ago. Will do more research.

If your thinking of hosting yourself i could chip in some hardware,a drive motherboard memory etc.

I think Ive only visited the site a couple of times, through links in posts here.
Just a thought could you post a "sticky" here for PayPal donations, which also may make Team OcUKs site more active as peeps making donations would probably want to visit.
Or perhaps a "sticky" with the link to Team OcUK to make donations.

I've not really used the site much in the past but now I'm doing boinc as well as folding I'm sure I'll be using it more and happy to make a donation :)

Probably going to move the hosting late-ish April. Looks like I can save 50% on the bill, or so. It's a good start.

Excellent news Zerker :D

I'd say there is nowt wrong in putting a paypal link on the home page, then if people want to donate they have an easy avenue to do so.

There was a fire at the DC where Team OcUK is hosted today. It seems to have come back up OK but I'm taking the server down for an hour now to check things over.

Except that I killed SETI@home by bringing the server down while it was updating. :(

The recovery from that is mostly automatic, but time-consuming. I'll bring the site back up but strange things will happen with the stats during the recovery.

Sigs will be back online as soon as the site is brought up. :)

Edit: back online now. Stats will sort themselves out automatically. :)
