Im pretty sure this was done a few weeks after Portals release for both TF2 and Half Life 2. I remember seeing the videos for the guy playing through episode 1/2 with a portal gun a long long time ago.

Wasn't that just a mod that allowed the Portal gun in Hl2?

Sadly it no longer works since valve's latest tf2 patch which stopped server hosts/mods from being allowed to spawn items on players.
