Ok i have a file if am honest its a movie trailer, and i am struggling to figure out a dilema i have about trying to watch it.

the file is moviename.trailer.2016.1080p.bluray.h264.aac-rarbg.mp4

i have an external seagate 1tb drive and i also have a western digital 2tb wireless passport pro drive.
i use the seagate via a usb direct into the tv the wd is used wireless
the file is on both devices but only the seagate drive will play it without issue, if i try to view it from the wd the tv pops up with unable to play file.

so my question is why will the seagate play it and the wd will not?

thanks

You need to swap the drives to see if the WD will play the file via USB. It's either the way the TV is reading the file over wireless, or it's the way the WD is presenting the file to the TV. Does the Passport do anything other that serve the file? Is it running some kind of media server that the TV is picking up wirelessly? Try renaming the file to end in .MKV and see what happens.

thanks for the reply, unfortunatly i do not have a standard size usb to usb cable for the wd drive :( the drive itself has 2 server settings in its prefs they are plex and twonky i am unsing the twonky as i find this easier for my novice skills. the passport does nothing except present the file to the tv. will try the renaming bit and see what happens

buddy if i was close to you now i'd buy you a beer, i changed the extension to mkv and it played first time via the passport wireless :) but the strange thing is i do have other mp4 files on the same drive that play without issue.

cheers
