Hi, I bought my wife a Compaq Presario CQ56 laptop running Windows 7 32bit a few year ago for xmas and I don't know what exactly she was doing when the problem appeared but the laptop shutdown and she mentioned a 'memory dump'. The laptop now fails to load into windows. Unfortunately we have lost the Compaq system restore disc.

There isn't anything on the laptop of importance so losing data isn't an issue.

Things I have tried:

1) Safe-mode
2) Last known good configuration
3) Booted with Windows XP disc and loaded from it with the hope of formatting the hard drive and reinstalling Windows 7. Just after Windows XP appears to have nearly finished copying over the files it BSOD's and says the hard drive is corrupted.

I can't think of anything else to do other than take it into a computer repair shop or buy a new hard drive?

Any advice would be appreciated

If you can get into the command prompt I would probably try running a Scan-disk and see
if that will repair the corrupt sectors on the drive.

If that doesn't work then your probably looking at a new drive if its corrupt and won't load
into the setup and complete.

Yes try accessing the restore partition, but you still could have a faulty hdd/ram.
