Hey there.

I'm currently in the process of putting a quote together for my boss which involves a few computer systems and some software and certain cables. It will be my job to install this, have everything up and running kind of like an Internet Cafe but free access.

How much should I charge per hour for this sort of work?

Yeah sounds reasonable, I'll hit the middle and if he wants to negotiate that's fine.

I'm 23 and it really isn't that complicated.

ADSL -> Router -> Three computers

Extension cables for peripherals, labeling of cables for easy removal each day and installing and configuring software (restrictions, AV etc).

A few hours to complete I guess

While we're on the subject does anybody know of some really good user control software.

The aim is to prevent anything but designated applications from running, lock down certain things.

One that would allow restrictions to be placed on Firefox would be nice as I would like to move away from IE.

Is there a server involved? If so, policies will do all that.

You can probably do a lot of it using local group policies.

If you want to get the computers to always start back up in their original state regardless of what people have done have a look at a program called "deep freeze".

essentially nothing you do (even formatting the hard disk) is saved, changes can only be permanently made after entering the appropriate password. However it runs fairly invisibly.

windows broken? turn it off and back on - sorted.

No server, space and complexity is limited. The people I work with will have trouble operating it when I'm not around.

Do you know of any really good policy tutorials/resources. I have never used them.

Two systems will probably be running Vista, the other will be running XP Home. I am a mac user myself so haven't used windows for a while.

That's brilliant, thanks :)

What is your level of experience?

I'm a computer science student just finished second year so not sure if that qualifies for a higher rate.

You don't really need a Comp Sci degree to put a PC together and install some software, I was doing all that when I was 14. Basically I don't think experience really matters. I suppose it might sound good though.

You're absolutely right. Most people started programming and tinkering with computers before high school. I had a Dragon 32 when I was 8 and gave myself a fair few jolts from touching things I shouldn't have. Helps to unplug the mains too.

I was basing my previous post on the idea that maybe qualifications could increase the rate. I'm not greedy though so £9 sounds good but if the work is worth more then I would go higher.

Exactly. Im 22 now... so that means I've got 11 years commercial experience building pc's. (yeah I had a job repairing and building pc's at 11)

As for qualifications... only GCSE's as I went to work for EDS.

I think you should charge more than £9 an hour tbh
