Replacement speakers for Technics SB3030s? Low budget

I don't normally visit this section of the forum but I have a Technics SU-Z11 amp here and a pair of Technics SB3030 speakers. They must be at least 25 years old or so by now. However there is a problem; the midrange driver (is that right?) has blown on one of the speakers which causes horrible distortion when you turn the volume up within reasonable levels.

I'm considering the idea of replacing the speakers but want to know what the bottleneck in my system is. I'm using my PC with an Audigy 2 ZS and FLAC encoded music. I'm not after super high quality at all because I really can't afford it.

So I have two questions really:
a) How does the SU-Z11 compare to modern amps, and is the difference something I would be likely to notice when used with the other components in my system?
b) What would be a suitable pair of replacement speakers, and how much would I be looking at spending on them (would be buying second hand I think - chances are I won't buy any at all as money is scarce, but am just interested to know what I would be looking for).

Thanks, null :)

I've just wedged an old sock in between the removable cover panel and the midrange driver in the broken speaker in an attempt to muffle the distortion. It's worked surprisingly well and the sound is now relatively distortion free, though of course lacking in the midrage on the left hand side. Really is quite an improvement - I definately like hifi :)

Any info on suitable replacements still much appreciated.

I don't know anything about your amp, but Mordaunt Short 902's often go for £50 or so on auction sites and there amazing for the money.

Thanks for the reply :)

I have to admit I know very little when it comes to hi-fi so please correct me if I'm wrong, but I can't help imagining the bass would be lacking with the Mordaunt Short 902s when compared to the SB 3030s. I've dug out a picture (from January 2004  ) of one of them, if pictures are any use in judging speakers:

The woofer is 7" diameter. Are the 902s likely to be as good as/better/worse than these?

Thanks, null :)
