Been out of the PC game for a while, but have been asked to look in to upgrades for our teenagers PC while on a budget.
He has just started getting in to 3d Printer, other than that plays minecraft and plant crafter type games.

His uncle gave him the PC for free and it was fine to see how he got on with it but now he is looking to upgrade.

The CPU seems to be the biggest bottleneck at the moment so looking for what is available. His budget is about £70 - 100, but i would likely help out if its worth the cost.

Specs at the moment are

CPU - Intel G4520
Ram - 16gb DDR4
Mobo - Asus Z170-A LGA1151
GFX - Geforce GTX1060 6gb

Also hoping for this to be a catalyst to get him to do more around the house in order to get upgrades quicker!

Any recommendation welcome

What speed DDR 4 is it ?

I would be tempted by getting a 12400f £99 and a suitable motherboard a h610 can be had for £55

For about £40 you can upgrade the CPU to a Intel Core i7-6700k.. easily findable on the rude sounding shop..

then just need to find a cooler that will fit, and you've got something much better for not much money

yea, trying to show him that PC gaming comes at a cost.
ideally at some point i will either overhaul the whole rig but for now, if i can remove some of the bottle neck he is seeing then that will do, as he does have a tendency to hyper focus on something then stop in his tracks with it.......... hence the piano in the living room :D

If you don’t mind performing two small hacks, you can upgrade to a 8700k.
Im hoping to get him in to doing everything himself. I think the plan at the moment will be to update to the 6700K, get him earning some money from chores etc and that should give him a better option to select what he wants to update next :)

thats the plan atleast and worse case he doesnt stick with it then it saves me a lot of money :D

You can get a 7600k for less then £30 delivered, more then double performance of what he has now for his CPU, double the cores and slightly higher clock speeds.

It would appear I’m a few sandwiches short of a picnic when it comes to MM Access. Will have to up my activity on site and hope the goods are still there. When clearing the attic from a leak in the roof I found a X299 build that is mostly done so might pick up the last bit for this rig at the same time

Indeed, think it’s been reinstated, been busy sorting out a leaking roof so hopefully will get some time set aside to go through everything with him tonight
