I didn't realise it was bad until I went there in 2008, and I found myself surrounded by people with great looking teeth. Maybe you just got acclimatised and didn't notice when you got here?
Statistically we have much healthier teeth than Americans I was surprised to find but this was about 2 years ago and I can't find the chart that told me so anymore. I am talking purely cosmetically though.
It is an old stereotype though.....but I suspect that artificial teeth whitening is more prevalent in the US.....as well as child teeth straightening....but you'll find that is now on par with the US, if not more so.
Fact is, if you eat healthy, dont smoke and brush properly twice a day with a decent brush and paste then you shouldnt need to use whitening for cosmetic reasons.....
