It is an old stereotype though.....but I suspect that artificial teeth whitening is more prevalent in the US.....as well as child teeth straightening....but you'll find that is now on par with the US, if not more so.

Fact is, if you eat healthy, dont smoke and brush properly twice a day with a decent brush and paste then you shouldnt need to use whitening for cosmetic reasons.....

I do not think Simon Cowell has had his teeth whitened.
He has had his entire set crowned and veneered.
Completely different process involving destruction of the natural tooth substance.
 
I don't like the sound of any of these whitening products including crest. I've read too many stories of people getting sensitive teeth and/or gums permanently. It wouldn't be the sensitivity that bothered me but the cause of it - it's cause by exposed dentine because the enamel has been stripped off. Dentine is much softer and yellows and decays much more easily than enamel so later in life you might seriously regret using whitening products early on.

If there was a whitening solution which was 100% enamel safe at a cheap price I might consider it, but as far as I'm aware there are currently none which fit the bill.

I think it's because often Americans get those false teeth things (I can't remember the name...maybe enamels?) stuck onto their teeth and therefore they are incredibly white. This seems to be quite common. English people don't seem to go for it so much.
