I have been to the dentist today and as usual he has told me my teeth are superb and there is nothing to be concerned about. I have never had a thing done with my teeth.

He always seems surprised as though it is rare (im 33) and everyone I know bar one person seems to have umpteen fillings etc.

Now the thing is about me which is unusual is that I have never used toothpaste. As a kid i couldnt stand the stuff. So I use water and a bit of tea tree oil as a disinfectant. The other person who I know and has had no work done either rarely uses toothpaste as well.

My Uncle who is a retired chemist did studies on toothpaste a few years ago with fluoride and came to the conclusion that they actually rot teeth in the long term and not keep them from decaying as claimed. Typed in bad and fluoride and there seems to be a lot of info on google.

Maybe a conspiracy to keep us buying the stuff!

Maybe im a one off but was wondering whether anyone else has experienced this? Not a big concern of mine but intruiging nonetheless.

Only ever had braces, never a filling. I'm in the chair about 20 seconds every 6 months, its not even worth going out for.

Probably brushed my teeth an average 11/14 times per week you're suppose to do them.

Whoa, it's funny you should mention this because I pretty much do the same. Can't stand paste.

I also never have to have any work done. I did have to go through a period of having a couple of fillings but it's because I was at college drinking *a lot* of vodka with *a lot* of coke/bull and I don't do the sweet drinks anymore since then.

So yeah... No toothpaste, no work. Conspiracy theories ahoy!

Not everyones teeth are the same, mine are rather terrible in respect that they are soft (much like my mums) so sadly I have a few fillings and random bits of my teeth seem to snap off or chip now and then.

I'm 26 and I've had fillings since I could remember, I've also had 2 teeth crack in half, once while eating a roll :-/

I've always brushed my teeth twice a day, drink about 4 pints of milk a week, don't drink any fizzy drinks (not for about 7 years anyway)

More metal than tooth in my mouth, due to me 'CBA' feeling when i was young a stupid and maybe brushed my teeth 1 or 2 times a month, Paid for it in later life though... silly thing to do but there you go.

Will give the tea tree oil a blast and see what happens...

My dentist keeps telling me I'm brushing too hard, I can't do it any damn softer! So apparently I'm scrubbing away the enamel on my teeth.

I have quite a few fillings even though I really try and look after my teeth. I brush twice a day and use mouthwash too.

I've just had my first filling at age 33 and I have been using toothpaste. I suspect it is diet related as I don't have a sweet tooth and have only in the last couple of years started eating biscuits and chocolate on occasion.

The consensus amongst clinicians, dentists and dental bodies in Scotland is that all children aged between 1 month and 6 years old should have a toothpaste which has a 1000 ppm (parts per million) fluoride quotient. This raises once the child passes this age. Brushing with a paste is recommended for everyone.

Your teeth may not fall apart if you never use a paste but you would be in the tiniest of minorities that stats can represent if this were the case.

Diet etc all play a part, of course, but the use and selling of toothpaste is far from a conspiracy. It's an absolute fundamental for the huge majority of people.

Diet plays probably the biggest part in decay of teeth, so if you're hardly ever having any sugar then you wont really develop any decay. Some people are more prone to decay due to certain types of bacteria in the mouth and others are less so. Does the area you live in have fluoridated water?

I'm nearly 44 (:() and have never had a filling nor have my older brothers, my mum says it's because she was too poor to buy sweets for us. I think its because they put floride in the water in Watford when I was a child:)

I've never had a filling - but 'cos I was a pain in the bum as a child, when I could have had braces for free - it's taken until now, aged 22 to get something done about my teeth!
£2000 for invisalign, but if all goes to plan it'll be great! I was also a little brat when it came to brushing....

Its people who have perfect teeth with no trying that annoy me!! Although I'm just extremely jealous - but I'm chuffed 'cos I now have the money to sort them out properly!

Got to 31 and nothing done to my teeth. But then I have got dental sealing on my teeth. Doesn't stop them getting murky though. I'm presently saving for laser whitening.
