Well after 2 pay rises in the last 3 months, and a call from my folks saying they'll let me off with the last grand I owe them for my Astra, I've started looking at new cars :D
Will be looking to spend round 10-11k and am starting to fall for an Integra dc5 type r.

Whats peoples general opinions on these???

Also I'm looking for some answers to the following questions:

My buget will only get me into the bottom end of the price range for dc5's, will this be a problem??? Do I need to spend more for a good one??

I've never owned an import before, what complications are involved in this?? Do does it affect anything???

Insurance - havn't tried getting any quotes yet, but roughly what kind of ball park figure am I looking at?? By the time I'm ready to buy I'll be 26, 6 years no claims, have an sp30 from May '03, only do about 7k a year, and live in an average postcode. Who will be the best to call for quotes??

Running costs - what are these like for this?? I have always done my own servicing in the past, is this sometyhing I can do on this car, or is it a job for a garage/specialist???

Parts - How easy is it to get parts for them if things go wrong??

Thanks in advance for your views.

You should be alright for that money, probably an earlier model with slightly higher mileage than the rest. Will most definately be a pre-facelift but they look miles better anyhow.

Insurance will be high - as with any import, so be warned, you could be looking at over a grand even given your circumstances.

Servicing shouldn't be too bad, there have been instances where some main dealers won't service them because they are imports but this is fairly rare. You'd want to get it serviced at a specialist like TGM anyway.

Honda reliability applies however it may be slightly trickier to source parts, but this shouldn't be too difficult if you know the right people. Body panels can be expensive to replace due to the complexity of shipping such large parts from Japan, so try not to stack it! :p

As with peformance VTEC's, tuning is a bit of a money pit, lots of money for few BHP. I think its possible to get around 250 BHP at the limit with full exhaust w/manifold and decat, induction and KPro chipping.

By the way, I don't have one, so this info is all from reading the opinions of owners.

Merlin is your man on here as he used to have a very nice fettled example.

But for a wealth of info, you want:

Thanks a lot for the info, will have to see what some insurance quotes come in at, don't really want to be spending over a grand.
Honda appear to stock spare parts in Belgium that can be ordered and delivered overnight so common parts shouldn't be too tricky to get a hold of.
As for the price of tuning, that wont really affect me too much as it would be getting left standard. The fact I'd be going from a 1.8 Astra should mean that the performance in stock form will be more than enough! Also with the predicted high insurance price in standard form, modding it will only make things worse.
Thanks for the link, been having a spy over on that forum for a week or so, just wanted some unbiased views as some forums/owners clubs can have a swayed view on their cars. I mean, over on the Astra club site they'd have you believe the Astra vxr, all be it a good car, is the best hot hatch in the world :o

I can’t really comment too much on the DC5 since I have only test driven one but compared to the DC2 it is a bit less raw and quieter, still very nice to drive and like the DC2 has an excellent driving position. Reliability wise not much can really go wrong, just check that the oil has been changed regularly and check the levels weekly. On your test drive listen for any knocks or shunts which could be from worn engine mounts. Regular service intervals the usual stuff.

Other than that try and get a few test drives under your belt so you know when u drive a good ‘un.

Thanks again for the info guys, just need to call around and get some insurance quotes and see what they look like and go from there.
Anyone recommend any insurance companys that I should try??
