Telephone Issues with New iPhone

My new SE iPhone, while readily accessing my emails etc, is incapable of sending or receiving telephone calls at present. The SIM card checks out fine. Likewise there are no SIM restrictions viz Network Provider Lock. But next to Network is stated "Not Available". Moreover, instead of my provider (Virgin Media) being flagged up at top left of the screen, I'm left with "No Service". I have full signal strength, but no answers worth the name. Any help therefore will be greatly appreciated.
