Intrigued that in this day and age, we are unable to watch ALL fixtures on a given weekend on TV, now I would pay for such a subscription as this, even without commentary. Its so irritating that I can watch a free online stream of every single premiership game that I wish to see, yet via normal televised means I am at the mercy of whatever sky/espn decide to show on a given weekend.

Is it only me that thinks it's ludicrous that country's around the world get to view matches that we can't even see?

Just because you can watch any game you wish at weekend doesn't mean that it's free. There will be still a broadcaster or carrier in some other land who has paid the Premier League to carry the feed. Nor does it mean it's legal or licensed for such a feed to be online.

iirc when the Premier League was set up there was something to do with Sporting Heritage that stopped live broadcasts on a Saturday afternoon at 3.00pm from the Premiership.

Yeah lower league clubs are rightfully worried that live 3.00pm televised Premiership games would seriously dent their attendances.

Barclays Premier League matches are not televised in the UK between the hours of 3pm and 5pm on a Saturday primarily in order to protect match attendances and atmosphere.

Basically because the top clubs have overpriced their tickets they have to resort to underhand tactics to keep people going to the game.

What is underhand about it? It protects ALL clubs attendances, including lower league. If the top teams are on TV all the time even lower league fans are more likely to just watch them instead. If people stop going to the games, there will be less of a new fanbase.

Dad takes his kid to see their local team each week. The kid becomes a fan and the cycle continues.

If all the games were on TV even more kids would just support the best team at the time. I have friends kids who switch allegiance each season as they do not go to see their local team. My friends who take their kids to seem my local team are for one having a good day out with their kid, but are also protecting the future of the club.

I tell thee now, my little one will be coming with me to see Reading when they are old enough, regardless of which division we may be in. Support your local club. :)

I'll give a good example why some games need to be protected from Live TV. Here in New Zealand, all the rugby games are on TV, even the major schoolboy ones. If you ever watch any Super 15 rugby with a team in New Zealand, the grounds are pretty much empty... This is simply because you can watch it all on TV in the comfort of your own home. People would rather take that option that go to a game.

Attendances at EPL games don't seem to be massively impacted by being on TV from what I can tell - most of the under-utilised stadia have empty seats even for Saturday 3pm matches.
You could perhaps make an argument for playing all EPL games at 'strange' hours with lower leagues continuing at 3pm.

It's not all about the premiership. Good that the smaller clubs are protected.

Indeed.

The games I have been to this season that have also been televised have had up to 4000 less attendance than usual

Brighton vs Bolton- 26,455 - 3pm Saturday
Brighton vs Newcaslte- 21,740 - 12.45 on Saturday, Live on ITV(Newcastle bought loads of fans as well).

There were other factors to consider in this as well though to be fair, such as season-ticket holders having to pay for FA Cup games.

Edit- Actually in league games there is no difference, so my point it wrong!:p

Brighton vs Hull- Sat,, 5.20pm on TV- 25,367
Brighton vs Leeds- Fri, 19.45 on TV- 26,402

Is it true that Sky can't show this Saturdays El Clasico live because it's a 3pm GMT kick-off?

Yes, I dont think there is a real difference.

If I could watch a United match on TV at 3pm on a Saturday, I would do.
It doesnt effect Grantham town, as I wouldnt go and watch them anyway as I dont support them.

All that happens now is if United kick off at 3pm, I stream it, and then NOBODY makes any money from it.

It's an interesting point about protecting lower league teams. It must have an effect.

In the NFL, some games are only allowed to be shown if the game sells out.
