I've avoided live commercial channels for years. The length of the advertising was just getting stupidly long.
So I started recording programs then watch them later so I could skip through the adverts. Then along came Netflix and Prime tv. Gave up on commercial channels altogether.
I don't bother using my Dvr much now. It gathers dust.

Anyway I recently started watching/streaming Broadchurch on ItvX. I am shockingly pleased to report the advertising is minimal. Sometimes there is no advertising at all between parts. E.g. part 1 ends and part 2 starts immediately. It's a pleasure to watch as opposed to adverts to endure.

Congratulations ItvX.

Just saying. :)

Enjoy it while you can, grantee within a year or two there will be 20 adds before the program starts.

Yep, 4oD was the same.

After a while, you couldn't skip the ads, ads became longer and they removed the countdown timer for how long the ads were.

ITV catch up is the worst on earth, adverts before the show even starts and you cant skip, about 4 other very long advert sections that you can skip.

Depends what time of day you watch and if you've watched any other ads in the past X minutes/hour. (some) VOD advert insertion factors in the number of advert slots that have been purchased, how many times the show has been viewed, etc etc.

If you watch a prime time show an hour after it airs you'll typically get more ads than if you wait til midnight or watch it a week later.

Likewise for a long time I've avoided anything TV wise with ads - I recently had the displeasure of having to watch the first few episodes of The Last of US live on Sky with ads... absolutely ruinous on the experience - in this day and age I'd rather just not watch something than watch it that way. Fortunately now my schedule has changed and I can watch it without ads.

Sadly a lot of services moving to having ads when you are already paying a fair amount - one thing on an actual basic account but when you are paying a decent amount just a hard nope from me - I guess I'll be increasingly watching less and less stuff and saddened that anyone tolerates it at all.

Adverts on US TV are worse! Watched an episode of The Simpsons on one visit in the USA. Ads after the opening credits, halfway (done here though) and before the end credits!

Who’s idea to use a song traditionally associated with Christmas for a travel company (though with lyrics changed)?

I need to strangle them!

Food unwrapped on Channel 4 is the worst.
Ads 5 minutes in, further ads mid way then the program finishes 8 minutes earlier that the reported 30 minute slot.
It's nearly 50% of ads in the 30 minute slot.

Recently watched a US episode of a show. Sooooo many ads, but what was crazy was the animated graphic/video along the bottom of the screen. Advertising for the next show taking up almost a 1/4 of the screen and then we got streaming weather reports across the top of the screen! The show screen did not compress, but merely the overlays blocked scenes, actors faces etc......!!

It was hilarious for a one off, but how can the Americans watch TV like this?

Totally annoying- a fifth of the screen dedicated to the banners.

I remember back in the day when HDD recording was new, manufacturers made DVRs which auto skipped ads when recording. That quickly got stopped, shame :/

Or me record something on BBC which turns out to be signed. The signer takes up a third of the screen. Never seen people making so many facial expressions when they sign to each other (have 3 regular couples at work). The BBC signers look like they are going to be sick!

Reminds me of this from Last Week Tonight:

The ads on Discovery+ do my head in. Apart from why the hell am I getting ads on a paid for streaming service I get the same ad over and over sometimes up to 3 times per ad break. Last week it was the stupid Cupra EV ad that is totally garbage and tells you nothing about the car and now it's switched to the awful LU biscuits ad. It's like torture!!

4od is/was hilariously bad for ads. Like 10mins at every break that you couldn’t skip. Jog on, not happening.

Like what? At the end of the day it should be simple: you either pay for a service with no ads or the provider is supported by ad payment  I’m sure that’s not the case everywhere but hey.
