Did you power cycle the modem after plugging it directly to you PC? That screenshot shows that your PC couldn't get an IP address so it decided to assign itself one.
That's still wonky. You have disabled all firewalls?
Tried switching the modem off, disconnecting it from the PC, switching it back on, waiting for the lights to steady up, then hooking it up?
