My two cents:
Like anywhere there are nice area's, and seriously bad area's.
Keep away from Great Hollands, Birch Hill etc as they are abit of a dive. I would recommend Warfield - really nice area but is quite pricey.
It's correct there is no nightlife (1 club, which is rough as hell) so Windsor, Reading, or Wokingham for nights out.
I would prefer Bracknell to Reading or Slough, but then again people will probably disagree.
