I'm a little bit confused about this, when my brother in law and I inspected the Vectra before I bought it, we were very careful in checking all the usual places for rust, wheel arches etc and there was absolutely no indication of it anywhere, no bubbling, nothing.

5(ish) months on and all the arches have underlying rust, the side indicator strip has rusted around the edges and there are small patches on each side of the door with the same problem. I know cavaliers and vectra's are notorious for rusting through on the arches but I wasn't expecting it to happen quite so soon so I can only assume that the arches must have been resprayed at some point without having all of the oxidation removed properly first.

Anyway, I'm not going to the expense of getting it treated, resprayed and clear coated as it'll probably cost more than I payed for the actual car so I'm going to have a bash myself.

I'm planning to dremel down to bare metal (hopefully there is some), slap some rust remover/inhibitor on, use some rust inhibiting primer, sand, more primer, sand, rinse and repeat as necessary then use the colour matched paint I have to top it off.

Chances of it not looking like a child threw some paint at it? Slim to none, but it'll hopefully still look better than a rusty old skip.

Anyone with severe lack of bodywork and or DIY skills had a go at this before? How did it turn out?

Mostly sounds good, I wouldn't mess about with a dremel though. Angle grinder with a wire brush on will be 1000x quicker and get it cleaner.

What he said really. Make sure that the area is clear of any rust, well treated (ie. cleaned with ethanol) and most importantly DRY when you do your filling and spraying. No point in trapping more moisture under the paint by doing it outside in this weather.

O/T - I didn't realise that you still lurked here Dave, your signature threw me!

I'm thinking about a similar mission on my fiesta
you using cans or do you have a proper paint gun? And anyone know how mug a angle grinder is lol? Finally is it best to grind and entire panel or just the affected area?

Chris know about rust, listen to him :p.

Yeah, still around, signature is just there so I can spot my posts. Can't arsed with making a good one.

i'm doing the same on my fiesta atm.

its rotted over last couple years badly. sills and arches are pretty bad. and the rear floor.

i'm currently cutting all the areas out, welding in new plates atm, its the only real way to rid it.

for rust treatment, go for bilt hamber products, avoid kurust etc. never have success with those.
