I'm a little bit confused about this, when my brother in law and I inspected the Vectra before I bought it, we were very careful in checking all the usual places for rust, wheel arches etc and there was absolutely no indication of it anywhere, no bubbling, nothing.
5(ish) months on and all the arches have underlying rust, the side indicator strip has rusted around the edges and there are small patches on each side of the door with the same problem. I know cavaliers and vectra's are notorious for rusting through on the arches but I wasn't expecting it to happen quite so soon so I can only assume that the arches must have been resprayed at some point without having all of the oxidation removed properly first.
Anyway, I'm not going to the expense of getting it treated, resprayed and clear coated as it'll probably cost more than I payed for the actual car so I'm going to have a bash myself.
I'm planning to dremel down to bare metal (hopefully there is some), slap some rust remover/inhibitor on, use some rust inhibiting primer, sand, more primer, sand, rinse and repeat as necessary then use the colour matched paint I have to top it off.
Chances of it not looking like a child threw some paint at it? Slim to none, but it'll hopefully still look better than a rusty old skip.
Anyone with severe lack of bodywork and or DIY skills had a go at this before? How did it turn out?
