Hello all,

I have been offered the above in S spec (1 above base) and wondered if there were any owners on here :)

It would be a second car, saving the Ti for weekends and days out.

Are the Golfs reliable, and what is driving like? I'd probably have it remapped to about 110bhp, and it has done 159k. Been offered it silly cheap as it needs a new panel.

Cheers :)

Fair enough, I'd ideally like something that's a mix of two - the Ti does everything I want, but 30mpg is killing me at the moment.

Living at home on my wage I should be able to go out, buy pretty much whatever I want, see mates etc, but I always end up broke at the end of the month - I spend about 33% of my wages on fuel alone.

Looking online, the Golf in question seems to average about 55mpg, near enough halfing my fuel costs. It's just a case of how horifically slow it would be in comparison, which I'm guessing will be very, very different :(

Edit: It costs so much to run as I do 25k a year including social mileage; my friends and the better half live a good distance away.

30mpg isn't thirsty really, I'd call 20mpg or less thirsty which is what makes it even more bizarre!

I do 25k a year, combined with the car's love for breaking various bits it gets a bit expensive.

Maybe I'm jumping in too quick, I've driven most run-of-the-mill 'boring' cars and the Ti stands out well as being something better, so I'm sure after a while I'd get fed up of something mundane. The wages I earn aren't too bad as I'm only 20 :p

The Ti is by no means a typical 'weekend car' obviously, but if other people can manage on that economy and similar wages there isn't any reason I can't... money just seems to dissapear these days :(

And yeah, I pay £1770 on insurance a year. :)

It isn't just any old Rover - it does shift, it's comfy and does what I want... however I rarely use the space.

And yes, the insurance is silly, but at the end of the day it's a comfy car and does what I want, I just feel that with my current situation it's no longer viable to run.

Reading around this evening gives me the same impression as I first had - all owners seem very happy with them and they don't seem to break down much. :)

An old Omega wouldnt solve any of his issues (ie, economy, reliability), but would be far far better than the 620ti (assuming that he got a V6). So i have to disagree with every single aspect and wonder if rather than the thread being a joke, that perhaps that post is?

How is an Omega better than a Ti? They're just as unreliable, and worse on fuel from what I can see.

And I didn't used to harp on about the old derv 400 being the pinnacle of motoring excellence, although without a doubt it was a solid car, but unlike anything else it had it's flaws. But for the money, the cost to run and the way it drove, it was a great little car while I was saving on the cash. :)

The 400 diesel was a good car, but oh so boring, so I thought it was time to get something more interesting, however I obviously didn't think it through properly with regards to my mileage.

Looking at an MG ZS TD tomorrow, maybe the best of both worlds. :)
