Tell me if this overclock is OK (i5 7600k)

Something I've never really fiddled about with is overclocking and given I've got a motherboard and processor capable of doing so, I figured: Why not?

So I've looked into how to do it, and what options to change etc and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't at least partially confused. Eventually I took the plunge and made some tweaks and I want to check that what I'm doing is okay.

CPU: Intel i5 7600k
Architecture: Kaby Lake
Motherboard: Asus Prime-P Z270

Base clock: 3.8ghz
Base voltage: 1.16v (I think)

Cores: All Synced
Overclock: 49
Voltage: Manual
Overclock voltage: 1.30v

Using Aida64 Extreme, it shows my clock speed as 4882.1 mhz and I haven't seen the volts exceed 1.328v during an 8 hour stress test (though I do wonder why they don't stay at exactly what I set them to?). Max temp during that 8 hour stress test is 71c at 100% load. Idle is about 32c. I'm using a 240mm AIO water cooling system though I'm in the process of moving to a custom loop once components all finally arrive.

Can anyone tell me if this sounds safe or whether anything needs to change? Or is it possible to potentially squeeze more out of it safely?

I did initially have the voltage set to 1.29v but the stress test failed after 3 hours.

Appreciate any feedback!

Think u should be able to hit 5.0 ghz set all cores 50 uncore to 45 CPU set avx to 0 voltage to 1.35 test from there. U might want to delid that processor you should shave off about 15c off your temps even more when u go custom loop

what memory have u got? use xmp2 profile

remember if u only gaming u don't need to be 8 hours stable if its good for an hour you should be ok never understood people who benched for hours I my self use prime95 if it passes small for an hour that's good enough for me if I do get a crash I just give the voltage a little bump.

If your stable then drop your CPU voltage till your unstable then add 10mv should be stable again then raise the uncore.

Thank you for your reply.
Although the stress test for 8 hours was OK, when it came to 'real world' usage I experienced a few bluescreens. Each time I knocked the voltage up a notch and I believe I'm at 1.4v at the moment (not at computer to check). Doing this seems to have stopped the blue screens which was nice, and the temps still seem about the same (though the weather has gotten cooler so that might have helped).

I've toyed with the idea of delidding - I'd buy an i7 if they were affordable for this board but they're absolutely not which is why I've gone down the road of overclocking instead. I'm worried that to delid, I'll need to buy the tool to do it safely and even then there's some risk involved  and can't shake the feeling that at this rate, it would be better to just hold out until I can update the motherboard and CPU in case something goes wrong.

My memory modules are:
4x G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 4 GB DDR4-2133 CL15 Memory so 16GB total

I don't seem to have any XMP options to choose from - the list in BIOS just reads as 'None'. Does this means that I need to manually set the speed? It's correctly autodetected as 2133

If u live close enough I would delid for U its easy.

Your memory should have a xmp1 profile I read from the reviews it does not have a xmp2. u can tweak settings @ 1.35V

Can u post your settings see if there is any think we can tweak. once you go custom water your temps will drop a little more so nothing to worry about there

you say u might update motherboard and processor what was u thinking to upgrade too?

Sorry for photos but not sure if there's a way to screen cap bios? Hope the below helps to demonstrate the settings. If you need more (some settings are behind submenus) then I can look for those.

For upgrade, I was initially considering an i7 just to 'max out' the motherboard CPU wise but they're too high in price to justify doing so. The primary reason is because there was a bit of a bottleneck between CPU and GPU, but the overclock seems to help with that. Was just pointing out that it seems cheaper to buy a new motherboard and better processor than trying to get an i7 for this board. Maybe mid next year I might consider upping to a Ryzen with more cores (maybe a Ryzen 5 or even a 7 if funds permit - ideally something for AMD AM4 as that's what my waterblock will go with. But that's only if it's deemed necessary at the time.

Looks like the mobo isn't xmp capable..?

You can manually set ram speed / timings / voltage in bios.

Set vccio to 1.18-2v manually, SA to 1.15v.

Min and max cache to 46, should be a power limit box just above them, set to 255.

Go into digi+vrm and change your llc to 6. Thatll stop it overvolting on load from what you've set in bios. Iirc llc5 over volts a touch and llc6 will undervolt slightly / stay at what's set in bios. Can also change current limit to max (130%?) but leave it on t-probe and not extreme for vrm etc.

1.4v is too much for a daily. Cap it at 1.35 max. If you can't get it stable for daily use at x49 then just drop to x48 and lower vcore. 100mhz ain't gonna do much to daily use. Try and keep ring within 3 of core. Ie, 49/46 or 48/45.

You can generally find lowest vcore for cb r15 then add. 05v and it'll be in the right ballpark for stable. Iirc xtu used to be around 0.03v higher for a pass than r15. Arma is a great game for daily stability testing if you've got it.

Apologies for my post saying voltage was 1.4, it is actually on 1.325 but I wasn't at my computer at the time to double check. I hope this voltage is reasonable for this overclock at 49?

From what I've seen, the motherboard is XMP capable and it should appear under Ai Overclock Tuner (my first screenshot). In videos, I have seen there are three options: Auto, Manual, XMP. But for me, XMP is missing.
Video here and they select XMP at the 04:01 mark (this is actually the video I used to do my initial overclock, and have upped the multiplier and dropped the voltage from the values the recorder used):

I'll have a quick poke about now and see if I can implement those RAM settings you've suggested

Ah, XMP should show up if you change AI OC from auto then.

Yeah, 1.325 perfectly fine for daily. 1.35v would be recommended max. I've run my 8700k at 1.325v since the day it was released with no degradation, just benched it the other day in prep for selling and saw zero change in vcore req.

Decent enough chip you've got. Reasonable oc, temps are good, nice one.

Thanks for confirming!

Oh, that's interesting! How do you measure degradation? Is that something I need to be concerned about? Sounds scary

I've tried using the RAM settings you provided and I managed to boot into Windows. I tried a stress test (using Prime95, no AVX) and it lasted about 5 seconds before locking up :(
I was running a trial version of Aida64 before but trial has expired so figured Prime95 is the way to go.

I've restored my settings back to the CPU overclock of 49 and CPU voltage of 3.25 and running a Prime95 test again. Not frozen yet but definitely running hotter - peaked at 81c whereas I peaked at 71c with Aida64 - maybe just due to the sort of testing it does?

Not sure what to do about the memory, do I try adjusting again or not worry about it? Is it going to make a real world difference to me running stock RAM?
