Tell me something i don't know...

11 VCs were awarded which to this day remains a record for a single engagement.

Or can be interpreted as one of the finest bits of spin by a British government in history used to cover up the embaressing abject disaster that was Isandlawana ;)

Another Rorkes drift fact the 24th Regiment of Foot were actually at the time the 24th (2nd Warwickshire) Regiment of Foot and the 2nd battalion contained more midland English than Welsh. So no bloody men of Harlech thankyou

My beloved OH has a tiny glass tear duct, called a Lester Jones tube. These have to be made of glass as this is the only material that 'draws' water and allows it to function like a real tear duct.

Before the battle of Rorke's Drift in 1879, the station there had 20,000 rounds of ammunition in reserve.

After 10 hours of almost continuous fighting between not much over 100 British troops and around 4,000 Zulus, only around 900 rounds remained when the Zulus admitted defeat.

11 VCs were awarded which to this day remains a record for a single engagement.

My mrs' great great uncle was cpl(?) Hitch at Rourke Drift. He won the VC, but years later it 'vanished'.....the family rumour is that it was sold by another member of the family.
His character was featured in the Michael Caine film 'Zulu'.
