I've been out of the console gaming scene for several years. Now, my old man has bought himself a PS3. I've been round and set it up for him and he's happily tinkering away on Gran Turismo Prologue. He was asking me if I could set this up as a media centre... to which I had no idea.

Now, I know Google is my friend - but to save myself a whole lot of searching. Is this possible - does anyone have a decent online resource I can read through? He is currently using XBMC on an old Xbox hooked up to a simple FreeNAS file server. Most of his films are DivX avi rips from my collection (no Hi def). He likes the XBMC set up but would rather have fewer boxes under his TV.

Is there anything else I should know of in terms of getting the most out of his PS3 - bear in mind, he's not connected to the net, wireless or otherwise. Any online updates applied will have to be set up when I borrow the console... ;)

I would say buy a bigger HDD. You can get a 250gb for just under £40, a 320 for just over £40 or a 500GB for just under £60.

How's he connected the xbox to the NAS? I've got my ps3 connected to mine over the network, so he should have no issues with this. He should be able to just browse the fileserver shares as per normal on the PS3. Re: avi format etc, this should be ok, however it's definitely worth you borrowing it (so you can play GTA4!), but pretty sure there were some required updates for media (as well as stability etc). The only format i have issue with is MKV (for hidef), which I convert using MKV2VOB on the fly.

Cheers for the help.

He's got a 250Gb 'slim' model so he's not going to have space issues.

The Xbox is connected via a crossover cable (the Nas is an old low spec HP with a USB drive sitting in a cupboard). Is there a front-end I can load or is it all using the PS3 dashboard?

I'll be seeing him this weekend so will have a play myself :D

If you want to make sure he has the latest system software, you can always download it to a USB flash drive and install it that way. :)
