I'm getting blue screens now & then on my Pc and decided to check the CPU temp, I downloaded Open Hardware Monitor & Realtemp to double check. I've got The Witcher 3 running and obviously a browser session.

Open HW is reporting

Auxiliary: Value temp of 59c & 59c
System: Value temp of 86c & a Max of 95c.

I take it it's the system temp I should be looking at and I should be concerned with temps like that while gaming? I don't think the problem is s/w related as the fans are kicking some reight heat out.

When not gaming and just running a browser session it's reporting a system temp of 58c and the air flow feels nice & cool

CPU is an Intel I7 860 that was OC'd by OcUK when I got it just over 5 years ago.

I'd like to keep it running as is, would I be right in thinking of upgrading the CPU fan/heatsink?

The Heatsink I've got currently is an Akasa Nero that came with the build.

CPU temps are even worse at the mo, just browsing the interent & not gaming, all 4 cores are between 55 & 60+

New thermal paste & probably a new heatsink I think.

It sounds like you need to replace the thermal paste and or heatsink. That Phanteks cooler is what I've been looking to upgrade to from a Hyper 212 Evo. It's a decent air cooler with 2x140mm fans.

The AIO coolers will only cool either CPU or GPU, not both.

AIOs can be really good. It's just that personally I'm always slightly cautious of anything involving liquid and electrics but don't let that put you off!

Yeah I was always of the opinion that liquid & PC's was a bad idea, especially if I had to fit it, but tbh I'm really tempted by the NZXT Kraken or Thermaltake Water 30 Ultimate:p

One thing though. I'm running an I7 860 & a p7p55d-e lx mobo. as keen as I am to keep using what I've got would sticking something like NZXT Kraken be going OTT on old tech?

After advice the X61 wouldn't fit my Antec 300 case I decided on the x41, Got that and, well that wouldn't fit either so that went back and I got an x31. That does fit, it's installed and working fine, gone from, running at 95c + while playing The Witcher 3, to 56c. so I'm pretty happy with that :)

I'm keeping the old heatsink as I found that one of the arms that hold the screws to the MB was loose and waggling around so guess as that wasn't very secure it was causing the temp to increase. Tightened it up and will use as a backup.

Thanks for all your advice everyone! :)
