Temp on Opty 175 (939) too high!!

Hi

I have a Opty 175 and I'm having problems with the temp being too high. The processor is running at stock, with AC Pro fan.

It's housed inside a Pratorian Aluminium case, with 4 x 80mm fans running, At full load, the temp is around 60C!!

I also have 2 x HD, 2 x DVD, a 1900XT and a X-Fi soundcard installed.

At first, I though the CPU was not seated properly, but I have reseated it 4 times, temp is always around the 60c mark every time I reboot.

I have used MX1 and AS5 paste, with no difference in temp.

Can you suggest anything other things I can try in order to get the temp down...

Thanks

Well guys, I've changed to the AMD one and it's not worked. In fact, the temp reading is even higher, it's now reading at 64C!!!

The idle temp with the AMD cooler is in the low 40s

What's the case/system temp and what's the HDD temps?

The reading from PC Probe II show mobo temp at 37C. I'm not sure how accurate this is as the room is not exactly warm. The PC is sitting 12 inches from a wide open window

Right, I have installed Netsensor and as far as I can tell, the reading are very similar to those taken by Coretemp and PC Probe.

There are no temp reading from HDD, but I have noticed Nextsensor is now giving me temp reading of the two cores plus processor temp.

It is saying the core temps are 58C and 63C while the processor temp is 44C, these are taken at full load.

Str, thanks for suggesting improper seating, improper cleaning etc of paste/CPU.

The thing is, I have now reseated the CPU about 10 times, every time the CPU is reseated, the thermal paste are cleaned off thoroughly using TIM Cleaner. The paste are applied using lint free lens cleaning tissues

I have used two different AC Pro, plus the stock AMD cooler, using MX1, AS5 and bog standard paste.

The result are the same every time, so I don't think the CPU is seating incorrectly.

I am tearing my hair out trying to figure out why the temp is so high!!!

What's the TCaseMax and TDP in CoreTemp?

When you ticked to enable the HDD temp sensors in NextSensor did it show the temps as 0.00? Would be strange as it's always worked for my HDDs.

Both are blank in CoreTemp

Wouldn't the lint free tissues end up mixing in with the paste resulting in very bad thermal conduction?

I only use it to spread the paste on the CPU after it's been throughtly cleaned. The tissues are smooth in texture, like tracing paper, so ideal for smearing a thin layer of paste on the CPU before apply the blob of rice sized paste to it

Try cleaning again and put the CPU in the socket and put a grain of rice sized AC5 on the CPU but don't smear it etc just fit the heatsink and see what the temps are with that.

That's what I did with the AMD cooler, it was unused and had paste on it, so I just cleaned the CPU, waited for the TIM to dry then slapped the cooler on. The reading was still in the 60s :(

I'll give it another go, after all, I've already taken it off 10 time already today!!!

Well, I've reseated it again, nothings changed, temp is still very high :(

I have checked the airflow inside the case, and it's good. The fan in front of the HDs are doing a great job coz the HDs are cold.

The 80mm fan at the back is also doing a great job too as it's sucking a huge amount of air out.

I think the AC Pro is working and seated correctly as the cooler is very warn when I touch it, so it is transferring heat away from the CPU.

I'm beginning to think it's the CPU, something like the heat spreader not being glued on properly!!

@ luismenendez, the difference being your Opty is Oc'd, mine is running at stock

The CPU was bought from new, I've had it for a couple of months now. I noticed the high temp when I replaced the 146 @ 2.8 with the Opty. As I wasn't planning on Ocing it, I kind of left it alone.

Even though the temp is high, it is absolutely rock solid. I've had it running Orthos for over 50 hours with no errors. It's also been running folding@home 24/7 for several weeks now, but as summer is fast approaching, plus having a few days off during Easter, I though I'll do something about getting the CPU temp down.

Unfortunately, I'm going nowhere with it :(

Well, I can officially say my Opty sucks. I managed to put a 4400 X2 into the same PC which I know will hit 42C max at full load at stock speed.

It is 46C at full load!! That's a good 17C cooler than my Opty

Maybe contact AMD and see what they say? What's the temps at idle?

Temp at idle is 42C. I think I'll leave it now. I'm thinking of going C2D anyway, with Intel bringing out the 3 series in the next few weeks. I'll probably bring forward my upgrade plan :D

BTW, thanks for all the suggestion over the past few days :)

'tis only 60C. I ran A64 CPUs at 60-65C load; I run Folding@Home so they were pretty much flat out all the time, and my Winchester and Opteron didn't miss a beat in over two years. CoreTemp now reports my E6300 as running at 65C-ish. I could get it lower with better case cooling and by speeding up my CPU fan, but CPUs are designed to deal with higher temperatures than this so I don't see the point having a noisier rig. Admittedly the chip might die after 5 years instead of 10 - but does it matter? It's very rare that you hear of someone who's killed a chip through high temps.

Was your CPU OC'd? My Opty was running at 64C under full load at stock speed!!!
