I was checking the temps on my cpu earlier and have noticed a bit of a variation between each core. Is it normal for them to vary like this or should there be a minimum of difference between each core.

Yes it is normal for there to be a difference, your core #2 reading seems rather low though, do all of the temps go up by a similarish amount when you put them under load?

The chips are usually anything but flat, and so some cores will be in better contact with the heatsink than others. In extreme cases a core may not even be in contact with the heatsink, and there will be a thicker layer of paste between it and the heatsink, hence the higher temps.

It's why people lap their chips.

My B3 Q6600 was pretty evenly spread, but I noticed the exact same as you with my G0 Q6600.

I wouldn't worry - as long as all the temps stay nice and cool.
