Anyone know how hot the 3870's run idle/load???

From what my mate tells me he's changed his kettle and just boils water on his 8800gt so does ati's 3870 run as hot?

Seems to be a bit hard to say atm, as they appear to be a bit thin on the ground. However from the reviews floating around the 3870s do run a bit cooler than the GTs even when clocked a bit.

As for the 8800GT's, before I ran 3dmark06 I adjusted rivatuner to up the fan to 65% as soon as the core temp reaches 75, and to 90% (aka squeal!) when core temp reaches 85 degrees. I discovered that during normal 2D operation the fan remains inaudible. It goes to 65% only when I'm playing 3D games like Oblivion and Crysis. And then I have to lower my sound to check that the fan is in fact whirring at 65% otherwise I don't hear it. The gpu never reached 85 degrees... which was a surprise for me since my 8600GTS used to reach 87 degrees during Oblivion quite regularly... I checked and the maximum it ever reached, after 5 (yes five) continuous hours of gameplay, was 81 degrees which for me is quite acceptable. This is all on stock cooler and on a BFG OC2.

I don't know about the 3870's but I had read that they do use somewhat much more wattage than the GT's.

According to reviews the 3870 gets to about 85 underload, so yes, they do run as hot as the GT's auto fan mode, but if you set up the profles with Rivatuner, the GT runs cooler, so tell him to swap his GT for a 3870 to get the water boiled quicker, as the 3870 is hotter. :p
