is there a simple way to over-ride the temperature sensor, so the fan runs at 100% all the time? they use 3-pin connectors so can't be controlled through motherboard as far as im aware. what happens if you simple cut off the temperature sensor?

It depends on the type of sensor used, it may default to full speed rather than slow down.

What fan model, it may be easier to change the fan.

the fans in question are Enermax Everest 120mm and 80mm case fans, got them due to the fact they are more or less silent, even at full speed. hence why i want them to run at full speed instead. the temperature sensors is just a black wire and thats it as far as i can see, nothing special looking about it. :D

Edit: also as far as im aware they are defaulted at slower RPM and increase RPM as temperature hits a certain level, something like 45*C

It may be just a simple matter of chopping the thermistor probe at the end of the black wire and joiningk, preferably soldering the two exposed wires together and insulating with heatshrink or tape. This will either have the fan run at full speed or no speed at all, depending on the type of thermistor. I would expect it to run at full speed. This is what I would do.

nice one tealc (seems weird saying that! being a stargate fan!) can't belive how silent they are mind. :)

I have a somewhat related question...

Is there any viable way to tie a fan-speed to GPU temperature?

I ask because I have a HAF-X case, which comes with a fan duct to blow cool air right into the GPU intakes. I bought an akasa viper to go in the duct, but it's far louder than I expected, so I replaced it with an old vantec stealth I had lying around. It would be nice, though, to have the viper in there but have it only ramp up as the GPU temperature rises (in which case the GTX480 fans will drown out the noise anyway).

I haven't found anything about this on the web, but given the nature of the thread I thought I'd ask :)

Possibly speedfan will be able to do this by linking that fan into a table tied against the gpu temp.

that fixed it Tealc, thanks for the input! they are spinning full speed and are still absolutely silent, but now we actually have moving air! :D
