Temperature for an i7 @ 4Ghz?

it does depend on which i7 you have.
80 or below is considered good for the newer i7s. idle around 35-45 is good on air.

I always have my processors downclocked (c1state etc) when idle so you could do that if you want.
 
My X5550 (more or less the same as the i7 920), runs at 50C idling, going up to 92C when stressed, like benchmarks or rendering with both processors. Got two more years warranty left, so fingers crossed nothing happens
