I'm running a linux server and started having a look at the system temperature.

It seems to be hovering around the 47-52C mark which, to my mind, is a bit on the high side. I'm mainly worried about the disks because the longer they last, the longer I can stay in me chair without ever having to expend any energy.

I've been considering a variety of techniques from underclocking (both the bridges and the CPU) to water cooling. What suggestions do people have and what temperature do people think I should aim for?

Out of interest the processor is : Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU E2220 @ 2.40GHz, 2 cores

The processor is about the 55-60C mark, the value I gave was for the case ambient - it has a lot of high speed disks.

The server does a lot more data crunching than most servers - basically, hard drives last longer and are less prone to failure if they're kept cool and that's the main thing I'm worried about. After a major loss a few years ago, we've been really rigourous with our backups (hard copies each week and nightly offsite backup and realtime on-site redundancy).

I'm not sure on the case and fans - I shall investigate further....
