Somewhere I shouldn't be!
Hi Eveyone,

After an aborted attempt early last week to upgrade my machine, mainly due to noise (GPU HS and CPU HS) and high temperatures, I did some (that means a lot!) reading here (a great source of information) and I ended up purchasing a few bits to help with this..... so today I have finally upgraded!! nothing groundbreaking but it is a leap for me!!!

My new(er) specs are:

Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe
Skt 939 XP4600+ X2 @ stock speeds with Artic 64 Freezer Pro
Nvidia 7900GT XFX Extreme Edition with Zalman VF900 CU
4 HDDS, 2 x 200GB in Raid 1, 1 x 120Gb IDE & 1 x 40Gb
3Gb DRR Ram PC3200 (2 x 1Gb + 2 x 512Mb) - Cheapo ram and prolly the next upgrade!
Creative Fatality XFI
1 x Pioneer DVD-RW
1 x LG DVD ROM
Thermaltake Tsunami Dream Case

I have not OCed anything...... YET..... might consider it once I have got used to the machine and read some more on the subject, I am always worried about burning things out, dont mind doing the VGA but the rest scares me!! :eek:

My current temperatures are:

CPU = 40 degrees C
MB = 47 degrees C
VGA = 42 degrees C

The front and rear fans are doing about 1500rpm, the cpu fan is doing 2500ish rpm and the gpu fan is set onto 2000rpm, as I read that was the best balance for cooling performance and noise.

These temps were taken after a 1 hour session on Americas Army, which is the only game I play.

When I first attempted to upgrade with the stock fans, the noise from the 7900 was unreal.... sounded like a hovercraft at full pelt and am really pleased with the Zalman fan.... it was almost a shame to put the shiny bottom onto the card, the temps were about 15 degrees more than above, so imho money well spent on the cooling parts and the new case.

So onto my queries really:

1. Are my temps okay? - mainly concerned with the MB temp.
2. How do they compare with others?
3. My memory is 2 x 1GB and 2 x 512mb, the MB reads that they are dual channel, is this good, bad or indifferent??? or should I remove the 512s? this area always confuses me.

Let me know your thoughts!!

Cheers,

TC

btw Mr Mods..... if this is in the wrong forum, sorry...... please move to the correct place.

My idle temperatures using the A8N32 seem to be a bit high - CPU (40) and MB (51) and not a great deal has changed since I swapped it for the A8N, however my graphics card (GTS - 65C idle) is right above the sensor for the motherboard temperatures.

I have 7 case fans not including the CPU or the GPU fans and on my old board these were good enough for 30C temperatures. It seems to be a known issue for people using this board that pretty high temperatures are reported so you should be fine.
