Temps on a 6400

Running at 50C idle, 60+ (TAT) under load and it seems to jump about 5 or 10 degrees instantly when I put it under load.. not happy
Current config:
E6400 @ 320fsb, 1.45v
Thermalright MST-9775 using AS3
DS4

The odd thing about it is that I can put my hand under the HSF and touch the CPU block without any pain whatsoever. I don't think the block itself is getting above 20-30 degrees when TAT is saying "hi 60C"

Im guessing TAT is lying to me (speedfan says 30 degrees idle, then jumps suddenly to 50C at load wtf), or perhaps the CPU needs a little lapping?
I don't really fancy lapping the cpu unless it definitely is that, so does anyone have any other suggestions?

Yeah, use coretemp and other programs for a second opinion (look in the beginner's guide to overclocking)

My E6600 idle's at about 40C in TAT, and shoots up to about 60C under load. But it never budges above 60 so I'm happy with it.
 
There's nothing unusual about jumping from 30c idle to 50-60c under load. Depending on your mobo and software settings you could be running with a throttled down cpu at idle, with two cores doing bugger all to running TAT with both cores @ 100%. It's unlikely that in a real time environment you'll duplicate the temps that you see during stress testing. Monitor your cpu temps during a day of normal running and see what the average/high temps are. As long as they peak at no more than 70c you'll be fine.
 
ok, thanks for clearing that up.

Any ideas on the lack of heat transfer? Still running at 40-70C and the HSF block is barely warm.

any chance the heatsink isnt seated properly, might be the processor isnt flat so not getting decent contact.

remove the heatksink and see where the thermal compound shows up, should give u a general idea.

You specified in your BIOS a higher multiplier for your E6400? As it's normally 8x and at 320 FSB, that'd make you running it at 2560 instead of 2133 with a 1.45v vcore which seems crazy :) Just wanted to point that out, might explain the heat a little. Also remember that TAT reads the core's temperature inside the CPU, just because the heatsink isn't 70c under load doesn't mean inside the CPU itself isn't, as the heat will diserpate fast when coming down from that temperature to a case which is probably in the 30's.
