Hi, I recently finished a htpc build and was wondering if anyone could confirm the temps are ok for this type of chip; here's a snip of HW Monitor.

Im using the GA-A75M-UD2H everything is running fine, the picture above was taken just after I had used prime95 for 30mins or so. The sensor readings are throwing me off somewhat as core temps on idle can drop as low as 7c but when its maxed out its around 52c. Im guesing TMPIN2 is what the bios reads as if I set the temp warning to 60c it alerts when TMPIN2 hits 60c. I ran coretemp and that seems to read TMPIN0 so im running at a nippy 9c on idle i think not :p. Its not making much sense so anyhelp from others using this chip would be grateful.

100°? It's gonna BLOW!!!!!

:o

:D

Don't worry, they look nice and low. What cooler are you using, that's not stock right? Here's mine after ~5 mins full load :p

Notes:
  • Idle temps: MSI control centre = 25°, HM = 10°.
  • Load temps: MSI control centre = 50°, HM = 61°.
  • I've got the stock fan ramping up to max rpm @ 50° (very loud but it only happens when benching or heavy gaming)
  • MSI A75MA-G55 only has general system temp (no idea what your TMPIN1 is).
  • Auto vcore/stock clocks.
  • No idea why HM messed up with the max system temp.

Lol :) I'm using the scythe shuriken Rev.B for my htpc. It's nice and quiet until you stress it then it sounds like liftoff @ Kennedy. Good to know its not gonna blow heh

Nice bit of kit! The scythe looks good for chopping off ~5-10° with much less noise. (Nooo I don't want to spend anymore :p)

Oh yeah, I found 30mins of 3D gaming (grid/FO3) got the temps hotter by 2-5° compared to the usual CPU stress test. Anyone else found this? (the GPU does take up ~50% of the chip, so it makes sense)

Interesting, I havnt monitored temps while gaming yet as I havnt got anything perticulary demading installed on it atm. Im thinking of throwing a cheapy slimline card into soon just to give it a bit of a kick when I do put more games on it :)

Just make sure it's a 6670 or higher, all the others will offer similar/less performance to the 6550D. I've got a spare 4850 sitting around that I might compare for a laugh :D (Don't think it'll be much faster tbh)

daz87uk, may I ask what made you choose the A8-3850 over the A6-3650 for your HTPC? I'm considering building one and from what I've seen and read, the A6-3650 is way more powerful than needed for an HPTC.

Well, there is very little price difference and basically it was built for gf to play some games on + tv. It has better crossfire support from what I read with better gpu. For an extra tenner I wasn't gonna pass it down. I have also installed duel HD freesat tunner.

Ah, I see. Using it as a kind of gaming console definitely makes it worth the extra cost.

About the Freesat HD tuner you've installed...what software are you using with it? I've heard great things about XBMC but apparently it doesn't have PVR capabilities yet, which makes it pointless for me (I'm looking to build an HPTC for Freeview HD and 1080p film playback).

Well for software I just use the media centre on Windows 7. I havn't really looked into anything else atm Ive had a usb tunner in my regular pc for some years now and media centre has all the functionality needed for a pvr setup. As for film playback, I will prob swap the bluray player out of my pc and add it into the htpc at a later date and use bluray software for playback; for anything else I use VLC

Yeah I've heard Windows 7's Media Centre is great. It's just a shame there doesn't seem to be a single program that can be used for everything yet.
