Well my friends pc crashes every now and then after running an few programs. I think it may be due to the cpu over heating. In the BIOS it shows the temp around 68-70oC(Idel) Theses seem hight to me but i only have used AMD Chips. This is an stock cooler and no overclocking done. Pc was bought from the best shop ever PC World

Those temps are far too high for a prescott when idle. When I had one it used to hit those temperatures only when it was under full load overclock from 3.2 to 3.6ghz.

The temps could be caused by insufficient Heatsink contact with the processor or too much thermal paste has been used on the processor causing it to insulate the heat rather than transfer it.

Prescotts are awfully hot CPUs but that is far too hot

Have you got adequate case cooling? I'd recommend at least one case fan at the back of the case

Check that the heatsink is attached properly. When you reseat the heatsink don't forget to clean off the existing heatsink compound and reapply it. I'd recommend using Artic Silver - only use a tiny pea sized amount

Hi Chris.
I have the same cpu and my temps were 88c (i know i know)..
anyway a quick dusting of the cpu and case fan lowered my temps
to a respectable 48c.

in truth i didnt beleive a quick clean could sort this out so good.

hope this helps. :)

Thanks for the help he has bought an freezer 4 cooler so looks like i will fit it for him see how things go from there.

The AS MX1 thermal paste you get with the freezer 4 does not get spread on the CPU as you do with AS5 you put a blob on the middle of the cpu heatspreader then push the feezer4 gently down on the cpu to spread the paste.

Check out the website for full instructions :)
