Hi Guys.

I've just built a new rig around this bundle;

Anyway, when I built it, I used an old 92mm fan that I had lying around as the rear exhaust fan. Yesterday, I replaced it with a 120mm fan, and that required me to remove the cooler so I had room to work.

When I came to re-seat the cooler, I cleaned both surfaces thoroughly, and applied a thin layer of this compound:

I also fitted a new fan to the front intake:

All fans appear to be turning with no problems.

Now I know this isn't much information, because I had to race out for work and so didn't have much of a chance to investigate, but I'd still appreciate any thoughts. On idle, the core temps were showing around 38/40 degrees (measured with CoreTemp). What I noticed which concerned me slightly was that the temp of a single core (not one specific core.... it varied) would suddenly spike at 58/60 degrees when opening an app. When opening CoreTemp, for example, I noticed an immediate spike before dropping straight back to standard idle temps.

Now I'm not running this as a gaming rig... it's built for audio work... so I've yet to have it under anything approaching full load and I haven't bothered stress-testing. I didn't notice this issue before the changes I just made, but I wasn't paying much attention because the temps had looked OK and the rig's not getting caned.

I did quickly fire up an audio DAW earlier, and that was putting about 25% load on the cores when running, and temps were holding at around 40 degrees.

Any thoughts? Why the spike?
