Hi Overclockers,

I just built a PC from Overclockers

Specs are,

I7 920@ 4.0ghz 1.27volts With Corsair H50 Watercooling
XM3 6gb Corsair @ 1533mhz
Sapphire ATI 5850 1gb
2X 1TB Samsung F3 32mb cache Raid 0
650w Corsair PSU

I was reading up thermal pastes... and in the past i was using artic silver 5, I thought ile changed the stock H50 paste to Artic silver 5.

My temps are with stock H50

Core 0: 42 Degree's
Core 1: 39 Degree's
Core 2: 43 Degree's
Core 3: 36 Degree's

My Temps With Artic Silver 5,

Core 0: 48 Degree's +6 Degree's Change
Core 1: 46 Degree's +7 Degree's Change
Core 2: 46 Degree's +3 Degree's Change
Core 3: 44 Degree's +8 Degree's Change

Temperatures has risen for some reason, I have applied the artic silver smoothly not too much not too little. with a credit card. Evenly tightning the screws.

I dont understand why the temperatures are high. or do i need to let the artic silver break in? The temps of the stock paste was about.. 14 hours running after i changed it.

Now should i reseat the H50 heatsink ? smooth it over again and put the heatsink back on.?

Thought i was gunna get a couple of degree's lower. but if i known the temps where going to rise, i would have left it as stock.

Thanks Stefan.

Oh, I see where the 2x duel core chips are..... But Would it make a difference? as the chip i covered is even as it wouldnt make much difference? :)

Stefan.:)

Mmmmmm, yes it does say allow upto 200 hours. But i would have thought it would have made an improvement compared to the stock paste. even though artic silver 5 could have been made differently where it needs to break in at 200 hours compare to other pastes :)

Stefan.

Arctic silver recommend a line across the cores:

Might be worth have another go :(

Okay, Just tried another reseating, Put aline acorss where the cores are as it sates in the PDF picture on artic silver.

Temperatures are worse!

Core 0: 48 Degree's
Core 1: 48 Degree's
Core 2: 48 Degree's
Core 3: 47 Degree's

I think its gunna be 3rd time lucky i think. clean it all off and start again and spread it on evenly not too much not too little.

And btw on the bottem of the H50 the copper is not even lapped. its very poor. like brushed aliuminium sidewards scratches. You would have thought they would have polished it up nice'n'shiny. I think lapping will viod your warrenty so... :/

See how it goes :(

Stefan.

Those aren't temperature differences between ambient and load by any chance are they?

If they're idle, or if room temperature has been changing, you can't conclude anything from the recorded increase.

Lapping the H50 doesn't void warranty but probably won't help all that much.

Hi Jon, The room temp hasnt changed its at 25 degree's and its actually dropped past 30 mins to 24.2, and in Bios The main CPU temp is 43 degree's Idle, What temperature do you go by? CPU temp or core temp?

And What is CPUTIN? CPU temp?? if so CPUID is reading 33 degree's

I just reapply artic silver again (in less than 15 mins room temp didnt change) and the temps have dropped.

47, 46, 44, 42

It really shows how much you put on and how you apply it to the CPU does make a slight difference.
What iam gunna do is let it break in for some time, and maybe add an extra fan for the push pull setup i dont care really about how loud my pc is because i have tinnitus. had it for about 10 months now it helps cover it up :) lol

Thanks for the replieys guys :) Merry Xmas

Stefan.

i seen a video on youtube thats shows how you get a lot of air bubbles if you spread it on and that wont help with temps at all, try it with a blob in the middle, enough for it to spread

found it Here

By just watching that video it clearly shows theres airbubbles when spread on...
I guess with the blob is ooz's out filling every gap in its path causing not to trap any airbubbles.

For the last time i think iam gunna try the Blob method, and see what results i get with that :) Thanks for reminding me hyper :)

Hi guys,

Just added an extra 120mm fan to my H50 push pull setup,

And did the blob technique and.... the temps are hotter... 62,57,65,53 Very poor. I think imo spreading it evenly as you can is the best with the H50 and let the artic silver break in.
Looks like its comming off for the final time. and see what temps i get then.

Stefan. :)

Just reseated for the last time, i got

49,43,51,39.

I wonder why core #2 is at 51 degree's where the other same duel core chip is 39? Weird huh, anyone shed some idea's whys that? :)

I guess thats the best i can get, just need to do some brake it time with it and hopefully it will drop temps :) i could play with the CPU voltage and lower it and get colder temps.

But thanks for all the help on this :)

Stefan

I just found something out,

I know i should be moving around the heatsink while my pc is on monitoring the temps.

Ive just wiggled it about and the temps hardly changes, sometimes it will rise of people of the paste is moving.

But then i thought.. what if i applied pressure. guess what... the temps dropped like crazy. So i tighted up the 4 screws evenly. While i was putting pressure on the heat block. And now! my temperatures are

40,36,41,34 With Stock Paste 42,39,43,36 Artic Silver 5 Differences -2,-3,-2,-2

Massive Difference! Its not the thermal paste thats causing the problem, it just needs more pressure, so if the heatsink/heatblock bracket is not ridged enough to tighten down to the CPU, your not going to get the full cooling performance, and no i didnt apply to much. its pressure that was causing it :)

And still it needs breaking in with the paste, so hopefully i will get cooler temps.

Well iam relieved now :) so i can go to bed :)

Thanks for all the help that ppl have posted

Thanks again! Stefan :)

Aye, Happy now :)

Mm I guess liam next cooler to get are the ones where it has it own bracket, from the back of the motherboard than the plastic pins through the holes. or you could make your own washers and screws to tighten it up even more than the plastic legs u get with your akasa nero. i would :)

Running prime95 temps are at 69,68,68,63
I think the temps are perfect. could be better once broke in. but time is the key:)

Stefan.

I know you shouldnt try this but its up to your own risk.. if u want to that is...

Have your computer on and run CPUID or any temp software. Like i did i put a little bit of pressure to the Block itself. If you look at the tempertures they might drop. i wiggled my around and tightned up the screws. i got like 9c drop temps just moving it around.

And how did you apply your paste? i found out the best way after about 4 applications. is to spread it on. thin layer.
