Talk talk are currently foot patrolling the streets around me to tell anyone who will listen they are launching FTTC service on my exchange. Now, this isn't unbundled BT fibre, talktalk have put their own gear in the cabinet instead. Now here is the question, Do I sign with them ? there must be people out there who have already, but I can't find any reports with goog. I'm currently with adsl24 on the C&W 24Mbit service, which I consider to be excellent. But part of me thinks could I really get more for less with talktalk. Trouble is, I don't want to sign up for what could be an empty promise and worse still a laggy 12 month nightmare !
Opinions, observations, experiences please.

EDIT, just found this: http://www.broadbandchoice.co.uk/ne...g-on-fibre-optic-broadband-rollout-800089433/

It would seem talktalk may well have been busy and I might not be the only one asking if I should sign up with them.

i would wait if i was you mate, it's 12 months you say, i wouldn't risk it, and if they do plan to roll out fibre-optic then it all should fold out soon. ;)

I've had 0 problems with my TalkTalk unbundled line. Sadly, I know one person who has had a complete nightmare with them.

As long as you never have to call their support line, the service is fine. I hear support via the forums is better (or used to be).

I'm on a 24-month contract, btw, and have no regrets. For £6 a month I get a near flawless connection, and speeds of up to 1MB/sec, even in torrents. Can't complain about that!

So I had a talktalk rep come knocking on my door yesterday. He comes out with the usual speel about wanting to reduce my phone bill until I tell him I'm on the full talktalk package with added boasts. He then mentions that talktalk are rolling out FTTC shorty to my exchange, was he talking bull? There is nothing I can find about Aberdeen west exchange getting FTTC at all.
I would be very pleased if I get an upgrade in speed for nothing, currently sitting happily at 6meg but anything more is a bonus.
Oh by the way the cabinet is right outside my front door.

Dream on :D As far as FTTC is concerned, I thought TT were using BT's fibre, not installing it themselves? In which case it can only be as cheap as BT charge TT for it...

It's funny, when bt was round installing my FTTC he was taking every oportunity to rubbish talk talk. I think they have bt scared, one way or another.

A bit of googling confirms that TT do not have, nor are they planning (nor could they afford) their own fibre from the exchange to your house, or to a cabinet. They will indeed be using BT for all "up to 40mb" services.

Here are the prices BT charge ISPs for FTTC:
http://www.openreach.co.uk/orpg/pri...7ts7aVXmRr9vFtTzGPM4LitT33FkRprdkPimbVIJEBnnx

£75 connection charge
£83 annually

That should give us a good idea of how much TT et al will have to charge consumers just to break even.

[edit:Here's a better list:

I used to work for Zen internet a while back and the link you postd is the cost of using the fibre network, you have to take into account the monthly tail cost per customer and then the per Gb charge for every Gb used.
I.e. if a supplier has a 30Gb package they would price that package up in their eyes not to be used no more than 22Gb which should be the average usage accross their user base for that package and if the user has used less bandwidth that month then the ISP makes little more money per account.

I think BT wholesale cost per Mb of bandwidth is around £90-£125 + VAT which gives the ISP 360Gb usage per month per Mb bandwidth.

So again i would agree be cautious about moving to talk talk untill we ca all see a clearer picture on how their network pans out especially if they are going to fob of users with their £6.99 deal.

Talk Talk, talk complete bull****, they came to my house saying that I'm in their fibre area, I told the sale person hes talking out of his backside.

There is no such thing and only connectivity they have in any area is LLU at the exchange, that is it.

There are a few ISP's out there using the wholesale Opal/ Talk talk network offering better stability and performance Vivaciti and TitanADSL i would reccomend any of the 2 if your looking at the combined solution.
