Tent questions

There have been a few other threads on this already, I know - but I have a couple of specific questions.

Last year I had a tiny wee jobbie of a tent. Supposedly 2-man, but lengthways my feet and my pillow both touched canvas (I'm 5'3"!), and there was only just enough space for my stuff (I had several changes of dress-up clothes too, as I will have this year). Also, it was single-skin and felt pretty wet on the inside wherever I touched it (so, damp pillow, damp feet) from only the morning dew, as we had no rain.

So:

1) Am I better off looking for a 3-man? Or are most 2-man tents a little more generous?

2) Are all single-skin tents this rubbish, or was mine particularly poor? The pop-up tent type things look cool but most have no inner tent.

3) Given the above, can anyone recommend a 2-3 man dew/shower-proof tent for under £30?

Cheap, I know, but there are so many cheap deals out there that at least /one/ must be okay for an annual outing!

Cheers :)

I probably wasn't leaking due to the dew, it was your sweat and breath condensing on the cold fabric that made it wet, the only way around that in a single skin tent is better ventilation :)

No idea about anything less than £30 though, you probably can't beat what you have already for that little I'm afraid.

1) Yes, I would. 3 man is ideal for 1 or 2 people + their gear.
2) In my (limited experience), yes.
3) No. I have a coleman something or other that was about £50 on sale. It's great.

Thanks guys.

I realise I'm being a cheapskate here but it's worth a try!

Jono I've seen a few Colemans about - so you'd recommend the brand, at least the non-cheapo ones?

I've heard Vango is good too.

Col_M - makes sense. Less pleasant a thought, mind :P

What I had would have been under £10 from a high street shop where you have to wait for your order to be brought from an on-site warehouse... So I'm sure I can go better than that - I gave it away to a few girls off to what was likely to be a more drunken festival than the one I'm off to!

For me, the starting point should be a Millets own brand (Eurohike) as anything below that is just going to be rubbish. The material won't breath, the ventilation will be poor/none-existent, the poles will break, it will leak, etc, etc.

In terms of size, yeah, always take 1 off the number of people it supposedly sleeps - unless you really like spooning.

I have a 2 man euro hike tent and I can thoroughly recomend it. It's lasted me 2 years so far including 2 festivals and maybe 15 other uses for 3-4 days at a time with no damage except for 3 bent pegs as these are a little soft.

Double skin, up in 5 minutes flat on your own and down again in 10 minutes.

Tesco do some chepa tents, i have got from there before.

Now i have a Rage Bergan 8

Cost be less than 80 quid off the bay. I can park my car in one end, with it fully closed, and still sleep 4 comfortably in the other!! :D

I have slept upwards of 10 in there, using the central area with a groundsheet too. I can put up the outside in 10 mins after a bit of practice. Had it for 2 years now, and it get used a lot. Its a bit worn, and requires a bit of strithing every now and again on the peg loops :)

Tents usually have their dimensions listed, so if you know how tall you are then you should be able to check if you fit when buying one!

PK!

Another vote for hitting millets for a eurohike tent here.

My 3 man with a large porch big enough to store all your kit cost about £40 2 years ago and has been fantastic
