Terminal Services in Vista

I'm buying a laptop today but I don't know which version of Vista to go for - either Ultimate or Home Premium.

I have Ultimate at home which I use both for work and play but I noticed on the comparison pages at Microsoft that terminal services isn't included with Home Premium.

Is there any terminal services (remote desktop) functionality in the Home Premium version at all as I do use this facility for accessing the servers at work.

Having said that, about £80 difference between the 2 versions is very steep simply for remote desktop functionality!

Thanks in advance!

Could you use VNC or similar?
I have Ultimate but tbh I still use logmein.com
I do use remote administrator for some tasks but for the most part I need remote desktop as I don't always login as the same user.

It's mainly used for support reasons but it's one feature I can't do without! I suppose I could buy Vista Ultimate OEM if all else fails as this is much cheaper than the retail version.

To be fair if the OP is saying he needs to access work servers from home, the option of installing VNC on said work servers isn't practical?

I know for XP you could download the RDP client separately, not sure if this can be done for Vista though? As an excessive option, you could always install VMWare on your Vista system and have an install of XP under that, only turn it on when you need to use RDP to work..

EDIT: seems "The remote desktop client is included in all editions of Vista. What is not
supported in Home Premium is incoming remote destkop connections"

Your call, you are the guy with the cash but I think it looks kosher..

I've just upgraded (clean install actually) my XP to Home Premium and didn't realise till it was too late that by opting for Home Premium over one of the business versions as I wanted Media Centre I'd loose out on RDC which I use all the time to get to my home pc from work. - Ultimate was a step up in price too far for me.

So last night I installed UltraVNC on the PC, opened the correct port on my router and can now vnc into the PC just fine....in fact I think I'm going to prefer vnc over rdc partly as file transfer is easy, I can scale down the screen (my home pc runs one resolution higher than my work laptop) PLUS I can covertly go View Only to see what websites the other half is browsing all day on her days off which normally tends to be Next & other shopping sites :(
So basically if I want RDC I need to opt for Ultimate?

VNC and Remote Administrator are both great programs and I use these quite a lot to access users PCs as and when problems occur. As good as these are, I still need RDC if only for testing profiles, group policies etc on the terminal servers so nothing else will do in this respect.

Sounds like I have no choice if I want this functionality :(

How urgent is this decision, can it wait until tomorrow - I can knock up a Vista Home Premium under VMWare and check it out for real if you like, might take me until later on to give you an answer though :)

Oh it doesn't have to be today, just depends on Dell giving me their best quote but I don't necessarily have to order it today.

I would be extremely grateful if you would do that for me, might save the company a few quid!

all versions of vista support the client. that's all you need right? :)

i can't believe all the faffing in this thread when the opening post was so clear. :p

That's the thing, the OP was clear but nowhere is it obvious that all versions of Vista support the client :)

Ooh, where's that from?

I'm pretty much resigned to the fact that I'll have to get Vista eventually, but if I get the RDP client with Home Premium, that's all I'll need. :D

google? ;) oh and i can definitely confirm home premium has the client. :)
Thanks, made my day :D

the home premium version definatly has the ability to connect to other pc's, it's just missing the server part -so you can't connect to a home premium pc

Just to be absolutely clear, it is only the client I need for RDP and not the server. If I ever needed to access my laptop from the work network, I would simply use remote administrator like I do with the rest of the client PCs.

If Vista Home Premium has the RDP client, i.e. the ability to connect to other PCs or servers, then this is all I require!!

Thanks for your help everyone :)

Yep, definitely (not that I'm doubting marc2003's word), a screenie from my vmware install just completed:

Superb, thanks for the confirmation! Home Premium it is then!

whilst i was googling, i found a "workaround" that allows incoming connection into home premium. tested myself and it works fine. :)
