Terminal welcome message

I'm trying to figure out how I get a new terminal window to display a message. For example, I open a gnome-terminal or xterm or whatever and before I get a prompt it display's a little welcome message.

Does anyone know how to do this? I've edited the /etc/motd file to give ssh'ers a message.

motd is for all apps not just ssh. if you log in via serial or open new terminal window it will display the motd.

i'm confussed on what your actually looking to do bar edit this.

Nope, if I open a terminal window on the desktop I dont get the motd. SSHing in, the MOTD appears.

Just as an example; in suse I can open a terminal window and I'll get a message saying;

"have a lot of fun"

Edit your .bashrc and add something like "fortune" (without the quotes) to it (the fortune program will need to be installed for this to work

).
