We're moving into new offices soon and it's my job to network the PC's. All the cat5 between the offices is done. I have to connect the PC's to the wall sockets so I'll need to make up some cables.

I've had a quick look at some termination tools and there's a bewildering amount of them costing from £5 upwards.

So please spec me a termination tool.
My requirements are:
1. doesn't cost too much <£100
2. is universal ie not particular to one brand of plug.
3. has cutting and stripping built in

TIA

It'd be cheaper to buy a bundle of patch leads.

you can get a cheap generic RJ45 crimper that will do any brand of RJ45 plug (i had no idea that it would make any difference anyway?)

The rule is, you get what you pay for. £40 for a good one that will last you a few years. £5 for a cheap one for a one off job of 10 cables.

But if your making PC to wall cables, it's cheaper and easier to just buy a bag of 50 1metre leads or 1.5 metre or whatever.

I might do this anyway for connecting the switches to the patch panels

I found out about the brand specific ones (eg. Amp) when I was looking and obviously I don't want to restrict myself to one brand of plug. However brand specific ones might work on generic plugs, but I don't know for sure.

Not all the cables will be of equal length. Some will be connecting data logging equipment and lengths will vary from a few metres to tens of metres. Also I don't want to have unneccessary coils and bundles of cables.

Well i can't say i've ever come across brand specific connectors. RJ45 is a standard and to my knowledge if a crimper crimps RJ45 standard plugs then it'll do any type. All the ones i've ever used are identical, and i've just bought whichever ones were on the shelf or stocked by the website i was buying the rest of the kit from.

Also personally i prefer rotary coax strippers to the ones on the crimpers as there is no direct pressure so you don't cut the individual insulation half as often. they're much nicer if your going to be doing a lot of cables.
