Terraform license change and OpenTF

This is very interesting and could define Terraform as the industry standard tool that it already is.

It'll be really interesting to see how OpenTF manages the project, I know a while back Terraform had a huge bottleneck in merging PRs due to staffing levels so I'm hopeful the OSS community help accelerate it.

The trouble is, it's all up in the air at the moment, the fork is really only a placeholder at the moment. The other issue is the fork to OpenTF doesn't include things such as Vault.

It has pushed me more towards considering Pulumi.

But what does it mean for those people that continue to use TF. Will we need to pay a license?

And if we choose to go with OpenTF what changes will we need to make to existing code bases?

I don't really think much changes for people from a license perspective unless you want to be a competitor.

I'd assume the OpenTF people would want an easy transition from Terraform.

the license was changed 3 weeks ago and only relates to the up coming v1.6 I think. So I guess we can sit on older versions until OpenTF is fully spun up and tested

Their docs are saying it will be a direct replacement so shouldn't cause any issues
