I've been experiencing terrible internet performance recently.

It has always been fairly up and down, i could ping google servers for 500ms solidly, then a couple hours later its back down to ~20ms. I put this down to traffic shaping from my isp or just bad performance during peak times. However now it is pretty much > 200ms all day, even 3am.

While i didnt think this could be my router as my connection actually works i find tracerts return a funny result. Firstly i ping my router for a ~2ms response, but when i tracert say www.google.com the first hop to my router takes > ~200.

Could poor performance be caused by a router or is it simply it works or it doesnt and any performance issues would be down to my isp??

Thanks for any help

200ms to your router is defiantly not correct, you should get no more then 1ms unless your cabling is messed up or your NIC is faulty.

Have you tested with another NIC or PC ?

Also ping your router and see what response you get.

Have you got a wired or wireless setup?

Also what DNS servers are you using?

THe above tracert was from a wireless connection to a access point that is connected to the router through a wired connection.

I've just run a ping to the router on a wired pc for <1ms but a tracert to www.google.com from the wired pc timed out all 3 times on the first hop to the router, all subsequent hops suceeded but were > 200ms

For my dns i have set the router to use my isp's dns and all computers onthe network use the router.
