ok this one is bugging me and i've not found a solution yet. whenever witing to a fat/32 formatted memory card (for my phone, my mp3 player....whatever) vista is absolutely dreadful. I can read from the cards at pretty much what the cards are rated for but when it comes to writing, im lucky if it breaks 1mb/sec. obviously quite annoying when you want to load your mp3 player with music - it takes a fair while at 4-5 seconds per song.

Does anybody know why this is happening and if there's any way around it?

Are you sure the card supports speeds faster than that? Cheap ones are only about 2MB/s. Also if a device is usb 1.1, then it can only transfer at 1.4MB/s.

It'll probably be the Vista drivers for your card reader. I have the same issue with USB 2.0 keys/HDD's in Vista due to duff NForce chipset drivers, they write at super slow speed but work fine if i boot into XP on the same machine.

writing to my fat32 mp3 (hard drive based admittedly) player is just the same in vista as it was in xp - about4-5mb a second which sucks (my old player was about twice as fast). :)

i'll go with the above - driver problems...
