For those who are interested the tv adaptation of "Going Postal" will be airing on Sky One on Sunday the 30th and Monday the 31st at 18:00 hours.

I wasn't too impressed with the previous adaptations but apparently a change in director has led to this being better, at least in the opinion of Jason Anthony of Discworld Monthly.

Review: Going Postal

This weekend the third Discworld adaptation by The Mob Films and Sky
will be broadcast on Sky1 and Sky1HD. Part one starts at 6pm on
Sunday 30th May and part 2 will be on Monday 31st.

I was really lucky to get invited to a press screening in Soho,
London back at the beginning of April. Until now I have been under
an embargo and haven't been able to talk about what I've seen!

Going Postal sees a change of director from the previous two
adaptations and the difference becomes apparent pretty quickly.
Where as Vadim Jean was almost reverent with his respect for the
source material, new director Jon Jones isn't afraid to take some
liberties in order to keep the film moving at a snappy pace.

Going Postal was filmed in Hungary and the change of location has
meant that more money has been made available to build the sets.
The sense of scale is more cinematic and less TV-movie.

The leads, Richard Coyle as the wonderfully charismatic Moist Von
Lipwig and Claire Foy as Adora Belle Dearheart, have a real
chemistry and Charles Dance is superb as the Patrician (even if his
hair isn't black!). David Suchet drops his Poirot role to take on
the villainous Reacher Guilt. Other great actors include Andrew
Sachs as Groat and Timothy West as Ridcully.

I really enjoyed this much more than either Hogfather or The Colour
of Magic (and I was in TCoM!). There are quite a lot of changes to
the story compared with the book but for the most part they help to
make the adaptation more exciting. It's a shame that some of my
favourite scenes in the novel never made it into the adaptation but
I'll forgive them. Now here is a list of things that I am really
not happy about: having a square Thud board rather than an octagonal
one and shortening the Post Office's uplifting NEITHER RAIN NOR SNOW
NOR GLOOM OF NIGHT CAN STAY THESE MESSENGERS ABOUT THEIR DUTY to NO
GLOOM OF NIGHT CAN STAY THESE MESSENGERS ABOUT THEIR DUTY.

I could if pressed probably write a list of 100 things that are
wrong with the film but - and it's an important but - I won't
because I really enjoyed the adaptation. I like some of the story
changes, I like the relationship between the characters and I liked
the fact that the pacing makes the adaptation seem a lot shorter
than its three hour running time.

I've heard that The Mob will work on Sourcery next but I hope they
revisit Moist for Making Money at some point.

Probably one of my favourites out of all the Discworld books so I hope they don't screw it up though going by previous record and the looks of the ad I fear they have.

Struck me as an odd choice to make this one, chronologically speaking.

Will definately watch it as I am a massive Pratchett fan, but really wish they had done Mort instead

I was really dissapointed with hogfather :(

Moist Von Lipwig is an awesome character though, so hopefully this will be a better film. i might check it out.

This, the Death stories and Good Omens are my fave Pratchett reads.

Will watch it most likely, already got a vague idea of the plot though as i read Making Money without reading Postal.

I've loved all of them. Hope they do one about the monks of time.

Still, looking forward to this. Why did they have to have it as 'coming soon' for so long though?

Is it going to be on anytime?

I'd love one of the Guards books to be adapted.

Haven't been particularly impressed with Colour of Magic or Hogfather - part of the problem was David Jason - he can't play both Rincewind and Albert... This looks better though. I have really enjoyed the Moist von Lipwig books too.

Anyone see the animated version of Wyrd Sisters and Soul Music? I really enjoyed them.

How long is each episode?

Haven't seen any of the adaptations, have heard awful things about them.
I also haven't heard of this book, though I only read the first 10 or so in the order - and a few others here and there - Terry wrote them (but it was some years ago so may have missed one or two).

The Guard books were my favourite, didn't enjoy the Death or the Witches ones nearly as much, so hope that one of those are coming next!

I suspect part of the reason they're doing the books they've done is that they might require less FX/serious costume work, also they are each either the first part of a sub series, or standalone so don't require much prior knowledge of the characters or world (FOC for example would require you to know many of the Watch characters to get full enjoyment, so they'd have to introduce both "old" characters/background, and "new" ones, whilst COM only really needs to introduce half a dozen mainly archetypes in addition to the main pair) :)

Personally I'd quite like to see a Guards Guards as it's a first in the sub series so it introduces most of the characters pretty much as if you'd never read a discworld book before (no major characters carry over from the other books requiring any real explanations), especially if they got the right actors for the roles of Carrot, Nobbs and Colon (the last pair were the first thing I thought of watching Pirates of the Caribbean).
The downside is that GG would probably need several large sets and a heck of a lot of CGI/FX, not to mention stunts and a fairly large primary cast (from memory the Hogfather adaptation only had about 4 primary cast members.

Reaperman might also be a good choice for an adaptation, certainly I suspect non fans will get the jokes about the supermarket as a predatory beast, and death.

Unfortunately really most of TP's books would really require a lot more than a couple or three hours to do them justice on screen, and a much bigger budget and cast, possibly even a mini series each (with the same actors returning in the same roles where appropriate).
I sometimes think that something like the original HHGTTG tv series idea might be a good way to do it with the narrator possibly giving some of the little "explanations" that TP used to do with the *, **, *** etc :) (I've also wondered what a good BBC production of it might be like, if they did it to the same sort of budget as they give some of their major costume drama's).

One final thought that does occur to me, is that Sky seem to be going about doing the Discworld adaptations a little inefficiently. If they did them slightly more in order, and more than one every couple of years, it would probably save them money as a regular series than as "specials" done out of order, as done in some form of order they'd be able to reuse sets, costumes and cast members (not have to risk recasting everyone) rather than having to start from scratch each time (COM sets/costumes would make a start for HF, HF a start for GG, GG for FOC, GP etc).
Mind you that would require a much bigger commitment than Sky have ever shown to any of their own drama's/shows (their own productions tend to be very low budget).

Having watched the 7-min preview thing the day after re-reading the start I'm not sure about this one. I think like hogfather and unlike CoM it will be a good standalone thing, i.e. for non-fans, however I think it's going to have too many annoying little tweaks/massive plot holes/changes for anyone who's actually read the book.

Key annoyances from the preview:
-Angua being openly werewolf in public, and the watch's best guard?
-The whole cutting down of the jail->hanging bit, missed some key jokes and for unknown reasons (not even for character introduction, as he wasn't introduced) drumknott was the man leading him to the gallows.

That said I did like what was there, and the little recap of how he'd got to be Spangler was quite nice.

Seeing as I couldn't take him seriously in Prince of Persia yesterday owing to not being able to shake the "Jeff" character, hopefully this one will meld a little better.

I think that was quite good, not sure if it was as good as the previous two though. We'll have to wait and see... experience was ruined a bit by the neighbors playing rubbish music on full blast though ;)

Yup thought that was pretty good, never seen any of the Discworld adaptions before - Colour of Magic and Hogfather are the only two right? What can you say, Charles Dance as Vetinari, David Suchet as Reacher Gilt and these are only the minor parts. Thought the guy playing Moist was perfect for the role and Adora was strangely attractive ;)

Hope we see more of Angua in future too.
