I just got a phone call from tesco inviting me to a job interview tomorrow at 2. And then a driving assessment on thursday. Is anybody here a tesco delivery driver who can shed some light on the process? Whats the interview and driving assessment like?

In b4 the you need to be able to substitute grapes for bleach and need to be a terrible driver etc etc.

Thanks.

I believe there are a few members who are delivery drivers as I recall photos of damage to their vans & related discussion.

Oh & an obligatory GD comment of "Interview at 2 you say? See you at 20 past then".

If they ask you for the golden rule, remember:

Give them a bump, but not enough to show - fruit and veg for bruises to grow. Nudge that carton so the milk will leak, but only when it's been in the fridge a week.

What if OP is a rampant racist, sexist and homophobe and the interview is carried out by an Asian woman and flamboyant homosexual man?

OP DON'T BE YOURSELF!

Yeah! You can only be racist, sexist and homophobic if you work in the warehouse.

Well at least it was when I was a retail jockey. That and produce guys.

Im going through the UPS recruitment at the minute and their driving assessment was pretty standard. Things they were looking for were

No resting foot on the clutch when driving
Lane discipline
Observing speed limits
Checking mirrors
Distance between you and vehicle in front 4-6 seconds for up to 30mph then 6-8 for above to avoid any shunts etc
Courtesy to other drivers as they are high on company image

I'd be surprised if Tesco were quite as particular but treat everything as if its your own, the van, the stock youre carrying and be friendly!

Can't comment on the interview process, most likely to be a group interview with people who've applied for various different vacancies. It's all changed since I started.

The driving assessment is fairly straight forward. You'll do a mixture of rural & city/town driving with some reversing round corners etc thrown in. It's entirely possible to fail before you even get out of the car park if you smack a kerb.
Keep a good distance etc, they call it "Leaving a way out." Basically if you need to stop quickly or take avoiding action you have the time & space to do it.
No speeding into or out of limit changes (der).
You will probably have the joy of doing the assessment in an 'Automatic' Iveco, it is the worst autobox in the world. Ever. It's like having Maureen from driving school doing the gears.

Oh and handbrake, stop at junction/lights = handbrake.

Don't do this to the van when you've passed:

For the interview prepare a 5 minute presentation (with slides and music) on why this is your dream job and what you can personally bring to the role.

For the driving assessment turn up reasonably sober and try not to kill anyone. Actually, you can apply this rule to the interview as well.
