Tesco Internet Phone - can it be used with other VoIP services?

Do you mean there's no phone service included or 0844 numbers are charged at a higher rate?

You don't need a phone line to get NTL Internet as it comes in via its own coax. Luckily, NTL don't force you to take the phone service too. I myself now have NTL Internet and TV with no phone which is handy as I already have a BT line with ADSL on. :)

I think I'll pick up one of these Tesco phones at the weekend. Sounds pretty good :)

It's a damn pity the phone doesn't have a cradle or summat. Mind you, I'd pay extra to have a fully locked and loaded DECT variant

Nice review Minstadave, thanks for that.

Purchaced one of these yesterday mainly for use as a Skype handset. However at 4p per minute to speak to my friend in Argentina with Tescos the £5 credit will be put to good use. I will be purchasing another shortly to send to my Argentinian friend.

David, try Gizmo Project http://www.gizmoproject.com I've been using it for a few months now and the client software is REALLY nice (much nicer than Tesco's IMO) and the calls are a lot cheaper than Tesco Mobile once you've run out of call credit on your Tesco phone. Argentina is 1.2 cents a minute so thats about 0.6p!

Taken from the Gizmo website: "PC-to-PC calls have always been free, but now you can call your friends on their ordinary landlines or mobile phones absolutely free in 60 countries (17 countries for mobile). No purchase necessary, so spread the word!"

Have to read the small print on that (and it doesn't apply to UK mobiles):

Your friend also has to have an 'active' Gizmo account, with his/her home and mobile number entered into their profile. Calls to these numbers are then free. Active apparently means logging on and making very occasional calls.

Still a nice deal though.

Nicest thing about Gizmo IMO is the tri-platform (Win, Mac, Linux) support too. The Nokia phone support looks cool too, unfortuanately I don't know anyone who owns one, but I think the idea is you can use your mobile with any Wi-Fi connection to make free/cheap calls!

Thanks for the link E1mo. I will have to take a look later as I must take the Father in Law out for beer now. :D
