Hi all,

Basically, this is to anyone who works for Tesco, M&S, and Waitrose.

I wait to know what they are like to work for, and what benefits etc do you get?

E.g. holiday pay, sick pay, Xmas bonus, promotion prospects, etc.

I currently work for Sainsbury’s & am looking to move to another retailer as I’m not really getting anywhere at my current store.

So any decent info would be helpful

Waitrose/John Lewis give a yearly bonus ; this year was around 20% of salary, last year was similar figure i've never worked for any of them though so other than that i couldn't say.

I worked for waitrose for 2 years and though checkouts isnt the section with the most progression opportunitys, i requested to be considered for a assistant supervisor position and they trained me which was good. The bonus was deffinately cool, and the discount is useful. It used to be 12% after 3 months and 25% (on all food stuff, not Home goods) after 3 years however you now get the 25% after 3 months and 12% after 1 month i think.

I enjoyed my time at Waitrose, just watch out for the managers, at my store most of them were jumped up idiots.

Waitrose is apparently very good, due to the structure of the JL/W group, which as mentioned has some attractive rewards. Career oppourtunities are supposedly good at Waitrose also.

Aside from the people I worked with who were cool, I didn't really enjoy working for Tesco, the managers are total busybodies and the illness policy is ridiculous.

Whilst doing my A-levels I worked at Waitrose, enjoyed it to be honest. I was checkout trained but worked on deli/meat/fish. Good training too, I can still remember how to fillet loads of fish. :)

Plus I was on a contract that paid double time on sundays (£11 an hour is a lot when you're 18) :p

From a student-job perspective Tesco were alright, although it was years ago now that I worked there, they generally look after the staff, although you need to realise at the end of the day you're working for a big corporation and everything is (technically) strictly by the book.

I was off ill twice in 3 months, the second time because I didn't have a doctors note I had an informal disciplinary..

So i take it Waitroes is the place to be then?

I looked at it as , Waitroes compeat with Sainsburys ,m&s .. and Tesco well ahead of anything else , so with Tesco there would be a hell of a lot of oppertunity.

I think all Retail outlets have there fair share of muppet managers all part n parcle really. I tend to get on with everyone where i work now ..or at least i think i do :P

I currently work for waitrose, and have done on and off for the past 5 years or so. all in all they are a very good company to work for.

as well as the annual bonus and store discount, waitrose also offer a 50% contribution to any concert tickets you buy. they also have a number of holiday residences that employees can stay at, and they have a social club that offers very generous discounts on a very broad range of activities.

as all members of staff are part owners of the business, morale and job satisfaction are generally very high.

hope this has helped :)

i worked for john lewis if this helps. it was fab at the start, but then it got awful, to the point where i cudnt bring myself to go in some days. management was poor, ie not even knowing how to place an order or use the till!!

the good things about it was the discount, and ticket subs etc. I still get those as my mum works there and im her dependant so i havnt lost out on anything

my husband has worked for waitrose for 23 years (apart from a break in cyprus) he is happy there. he was a depatment manager before the move which he enjoyed. the company are excellent at looking after the partners (not employees!!) they have helped us out in many ways. when my granadmother worked for them, she went on many subsidsed holidays around the world and when in america she became ill they paid the bill, its was 1000ssof dollars.

Thanks for the responce guys , i shall look in to this more! i have 2 stores near me, but id guess ill have to ask some of the staff at the nearest store near me what its like etc

Tesco is all over the country, so as a student its great for if you move to ini, since you can just transfer stores.

I was off ill twice in 3 months, the second time because I didn't have a doctors note I had an informal disciplinary..

I had the same problem- I got ill and as a result was not allowed to handle food items so my manager told me to go to home till I was well enough to return, then when I returned I was sat down and warned about my future attendance which I though was ridiculous, I wanted to work but I was told I couldn't. In the same meeting I gave them my notice.

I worked for tescos for 2 years and m&s for about another 2.
In all honesty, it's a laugh on checkouts if you like talking to people, horrible if you have a hangover or you are tired.
The customers and upper ranks can be ********* in retail and you'll have little responsibility or authority.

However, it's crappy part time work, as good as it gets really.

A long term career in Tesco will get you decent share benifits, and if you manage to get on manager pay and training then decent holiday etc. Tescos however means constantly bad hours, extra work, and if your looking for anything less than 3 years, then its just stack shelves, deal with customers, get paid, leave....

Hi again all,

Well I’ve been to my local Waitrose and they have no places available! (also looked on there website) Working at Sainsbury’s now is just getting sillier each week. Basically in July 08 I’ve done 10 years service (shock) the past 2 months (ish) I’ve applied to move dept to the Bakery, which I’ve been turned down twice (politics get in the way) & I’ve been offered a CTS on fresh over night (which I didn’t take) as I want a life. So tbh I’m kind of in a crappy mood knowing im not gaining anything. There is no morale, no motivation, no staff, nightshift leave the chillers in a **** poor state! Just the same day in day out!

I’ve been saying to myself what else is there I can do apart from retail! Or another job In retail but not in a supermarket! I do have a level 3 IT qualification but cant get in anywhere at all so really given up as employers are looking for “experience” which I don’t have any in , apart from retail.

Rant over :D
