Tesco really taking the mick

I dont see too much wrong with it tbh, i mean its in their car park. I'm surprised u need permission to add a marquee to your own car park.

This really. they own the carpark and are selling popular & legal summer items on their premises. It is not a permanent structure. How shocking:rolleyes:

My beef is how they're using retrospective planning laws to do something that they'd be banned from doing (that's my assumption).

I bet that this marquee will disappear once the holidays are over and before it goes before a planning committee.

Why would they be banned from setting up a marquee and selling products on their premises, happens all the time all over the place. i am surprised any kind of permission would be required at all, no doubt the Tescos managers thought the same. The existence of retroactive planning laws has nothing to do with Tescos!

Tesco have applied for retrospective planning, so they must have know if was needed.

Or someone raised the point with them after the fact. Or an overzealous store manager didn't realise and was subsequently informed of the requirement by head office?

You really sound like someone with an axe to grind against Tesco - Sainsburys CEO maybe? :P

it's like someone moaning about me setting up a car boot market in my driveway and selling goods. If someone complained I'd tell them to **** off! The op sounds like a disgruntled worker tbh

I may be a disgruntled worker, but that's for an IT company :p

Tesco selling their stuff on their land? How has no one gone to jail for this already?

My guess is they didn't realise planning permission is needed until after some middle-management had already set it up. It's a glorified tent after all.

Ridiculous. They've set it up so the men can buy their emergency BBQ gear and GTFO quickly to host a BBQ without having to queue and chat with the checkout girls.

What idiot would complain about that. Must be jealous everyone's having a great time with their BBQs.

It's ridiculous that they can get away with this, setting up a shop in a car park and then apply for retrospective permission than will probably take 8 weeks, by which time we'll be past the bank holiday and they'll just take the marquee down.

I wouldn't worry too much about it OP, it could be a lot worse, you could be running it for them without any pay on the free forced labour schemes Tesco are currently involved in.

Yeah, took a leaf out of the Governments vile tactics there, they seem to really enjoy retrospective planning, after all, they got out of having to back pay wages for those forced to work for them for nothing.

I can see why local shop keepers are in a fuss because their trade relies on selling beach toys, disposable BBQs, sticks of rock, toffee and local wares. There is also more hate for Tesco than any other retailer in the country, especially in small communities.

Ultimately, many businesses continue to exist despite huge supermarkets opening. Plus I'd imagine from a tourist point of view, such shops on a seafront area are going to be far better placed than a Tesco which I'd imagine isn't.

It's their car park, and it's a free country.

Yes tesco can afford to sell beach tat as a loss leader, but you can choose where you shop too.

I can see why the locals hate it, but it's business, look at the way blockbuster video rental put pretty much every independent video shop in the country out of business a few decades ago.. Move in, sell at a loss for a couple of years until you bleed the competition dry, then put your prices up.

Welcome to free market capitalism.

Yeah this. As long as it was Tesco's own staff setting up the marquee, then fine. I think you cross the line when you see stalls at the fairground relating to Disney characters because they probably didn't get a license from Disney for their game / sideshow / funhouse / whatever in the first place.
